While Indigenous peoples make up less than 5% of the world's population, they steward 80% of the world's biodiversity, but only 1.2% of all global giving by U.S. foundations went to Indigenous peoples between 2011-2015.
The Dollar a Day Fund moves money to frontline Indigenous environmental organizations by mobilizing resources to support Indigenous-led organizations working on addressing environmental justice issues. Some examples of issues include but are not limited to resource extraction, health impacts of environmental injustice and land theft in Indigenous communities, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit (MMIWG2S) epidemic. The fund will also support Indigenous grantmaking and capacity building organizations that have played a key role in supporting Indigenous organizations.
Around 92% of every donation will be granted to Indigenous-led environmental organizations that have been identified by Indigenous-led grantmaking organizations. Donors will receive regular updates about the organizations and have a chance to learn more about Indigenous environmental organizations.
At all times, the Dollar a Day Fund will seek to place the wisdom and experience of Indigenous grantmakers, activists, and movement leaders at the forefront of its work.
Dollar a Day operates as a project of Players Philanthropy Fund, a Maryland charitable trust recognized by IRS as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178). Contributions to Dollar a Day are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
