APESEK, a non-profit organization in Rwanda created by Mr. Emmanuel Nyandwi in collaboration with 5 teachers and 3 local nurses has provided support services for orphans, disabled children, teenage mothers, families in conflicts and those victims of human trafficking for the last eighteen years. The Combating rural community poverty in Rwanda project aims to contribute to improving the living conditions of populations in Rwanda, mainly in rural areas, focusing in particular on vulnerable groups. It will intervene in the district of Rutsiro, Western province. The main beneficiaries of the project will be poor rural populations, particularly vulnerable farmers and poor women, adolescent mothers, orphans and people with disabilities. The total cost of the project is US$9,000,000 and will be financed by donations and will be coordinated by APESEK-GIRIMPUHWE. The project will be implemented over a two-year period from 2022 to 2024. The main expected results are the improvement of production techniques for 1,500 trained farmers, the improvement of the living conditions of beneficiaries, the living conditions of 7,500 poor women, construction of 150 homes for homeless people to save more than 900 people, education of 550 orphan children from primary school to secondary school, social integration of 1,300 adolescent mothers and their 1,300 children into the life of families and communities in general. Beneficiaries will participate in the project with their group committees and community volunteers.
The Kivumu region of Rwanda is close to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo and was the scene of conflict during the genocide of 1994 and the years that followed. The Western Province of Rwanda was one of the regions most affected by the genocide and has a large number of widows and orphans. This region is currently experiencing problems of land scarcity, high levels of malnutrition and alcoholism.
