WHEDco is a Bronx-based community development organization founded in 1992 on the radically simple idea that all people deserve to live in healthy, vibrant communities. WHEDco builds award-winning, sustainable, affordable homes – but our work is not over when our buildings are complete. WHEDco believes that to be successful, affordable housing must be anchored in strong communities of which residents can be proud.

Green, Affordable Homes:
Beautiful, affordable homes are the foundation for healthy and stable families. We currently provide homes for approximately 1,800 people in three mixed-use affordable housing developments in the South Bronx: Urban Horizons (opened in 1997); Intervale Green (opened in 2009); and Bronx Commons (opened in 2020).

Education & Youth Development:
Every child deserves high-quality learning opportunities from an early age. Each year, WHEDco fosters high academic achievement for over 3,100 children from infancy to high school through our EarlyLearn NYC, Head Start, Home-Based Childcare, After School and Teen programs.

Community & Economic Development:
Small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities and provide pathways toward financial security. Each year, WHEDco helps over 500 individuals launch and operate small businesses through our Home-Based Childcare Programs, Bronx CookSpace Kitchen Incubator, and Commercial Revitalization initiatives.

Family Support & Counseling Services:
WHEDco's wrap-around family support services link over 3,000 individuals and their families each year to the kinds of resources we all need to succeed, including health and mental health care, public benefits access and enrollment, housing and employment assistance, legal aid and immigration services, and emergency food.

Arts & Culture:
Arts and culture are essential to a community’s well-being and create a sense of pride. Last year, over 30,000 people attended virtual or in-person free and low-cost arts events and programs offered by our Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC). The BMHC will soon expand into its new home, The Bronx Music Hall, a performance venue and the cultural centerpiece of the Bronx Commons development.
