21 district attorneys gathered in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama for a visit to the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice and other civil rights sites. The DAs met with issue experts and impacted individuals to confront the role of elected prosecutors in addressing our nation’s history of racial inequity.
Founded in 2017, Fair and Just Prosecution is changing the justice system from within by supporting and inspiring locally elected district attorneys (DAs) committed to fairness, equity, compassion, and fiscal responsibility. These elected leaders – and the vision they share for safer and healthier communities – are supported by FJP’s network through ongoing information sharing, research and resource materials, opportunities for on-the-ground learning, in-person convenings, technical assistance, and access to national experts. DAs are the most powerful actors in the criminal legal system, exercising tremendous control over who comes into the system, what charges they face, and the trajectory of their case. From Chicago to Los Angeles and Durham to Des Moines, red and blue states are electing DAs committed to improving public safety by embracing new approaches to justice.
