Every child deserves a chance for a better future.

Enfants de Mathare financially supports the Roots Institute Centre (RIC), a primary school in Mathare, one of the largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya. RIC provides free quality education, nutritious meals and a safe environment for vulnerable children of Mathare.

To be born into Mathare offers little hope of escape. Many of these children will never experience life without violence, hunger or sickness. Joyful, intelligent, and resilient, the children of Mathare deserve the chance for a better future but they need your help to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Our aim is to raise enough funds to cover RIC’s annual operational costs, which includes teacher salaries and food for the student meals. Every school year we also try to sponsor scholarships for a secondary education for some of our best performing students.

Our long term goal is to build a permanent building that will replace the current corrugated steel structure RIC is housed in. We hope that this new building will serve as a central point for education and training for the entire community.

Your donation will help Roots Institute Centre and Enfants de Mathare transform the lives of hundreds of Mathare children.

Giving hope to the children of Mathare

Please help us in support of [Roots Institute Centre](https://rootsinstitutecentre.com)*,* a pre- and primary school that provides **free education, nutritious meals and a safe environment** for over 350 children who are growing up under very unstable and unsafe conditions in the Mathare slum, Nairobi. I had the opportunity to visit the school in March 2023 and again last week and I am amazed how much they can accomplish with only very little resources. The dedication, love and support the school’s director and her team give to these children who otherwise would not have this opportunity to learn and grow in a place where people try to survive on $2 a day is out of this world. More importantly, I am absolutely in awe of how much they can actually accomplish with only very little means. One dollar goes a really long way and for only $5 you can feed a child for a month. Our family is committed to supporting the school long-term and we can assure you that all funds raised will directly benefit the school. Thank you so much for your support, even a little bit can get us a long way to give hope to the Children of Mathare. Angelika

Miles for Mathare: Fundraise for Roots Institute in Nairobi

**Hello Friends,** During my recent trip to Nairobi, Kenya, with my MBA program at UT Austin, I had the privilege of meeting Daniel, also known as “More Fire.” He led our tour, organized by people who once lived on the streets and now reside in the Mathare Slum. These street tours are designed to give visitors a raw, authentic perspective of life in Nairobi. I learned that much of the money generated from these tours goes directly to supporting the Roots Institute, a school in Mathare that provides vital resources for children and families. The Roots Institute Centre, located in the heart of Mathare Slum, offers free education (pre-school and primary), nutritious meals, and a safe environment for vulnerable children within the Mathare Kosovo Community. Founded with just seven students, the school has grown over the last decade to serve over 350 children. Its impact is incredible, but the challenges are significant. Mathare, home to over 850,000 people, is a place where families often live on less than 2 euros a day. The poverty in this area is not a choice but a circumstance that can only be broken through education. Roots Institute is helping to empower the community and break the cycle of poverty by providing children with access to education. Education opens doors to jobs, health knowledge, and improved opportunities for the future. The Roots Institute’s mission and work are even more critical now, as recent protests in Kenya have halted the street tours, which were a significant source of funding for the school. The families and children who rely on the Roots Institute urgently need continued support, especially during these uncertain times. In addition to asking for your support, I’ve dedicated my training for the Half Ironman in Galveston on April 6, 2025, to this effort. As I prepare for this race, I’ll raise funds to help provide food, supplies, and education for the children of Mathare. This race is both a personal challenge and a way to bring awareness to the incredible work at Roots Institute. Every bit helps, and your contributions will make a tangible difference in the lives of these children. Thank you for considering this cause and for any support you can provide to the Roots Institute. As we move forward, I’ll share updates on my training journey and the impact your donations are making. Together, we can help these children build a brighter future.
