Sustainable Joy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is currently directing resources to those affected by the LA Wildfires.

**Sustainable Joy** is a nonprofit founded by Elizabeth Turner and Johanna Moonan in response to the Los Angeles wildfires. When the fires broke out on January 7, 2025, Johanna and Elizabeth were glued to the news, watching in horror as their city was engulfed in flames. As they exchanged texts about their desire to help the community, Johanna called Elizabeth at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, saying, "We have to do something!"

Determined to help, Elizabeth and Johanna decided to open a free shop in Johanna’s store, OpenClosit, located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. This shop would offer free essentials to families who had lost everything, becoming the first fire relief center on the west side of Los Angeles. Initially, they thought they might receive a few donations and help a small number of survivors. But with 180,000 Angelenos under evacuation orders, the need for aid was overwhelming, and more community members began seeking refuge at the free shop.

As the survivors flocked to OpenClosit, and the Santa Monica community responded with incredible generosity. Local businesses and individuals donated clothing, supplies, and time, and the relief center quickly gained traction on social media. Over the two months the center was open, it provided essential items to thousands of fire survivors.

As Angelenos continue to rebuild, Elizabeth and Johanna remain committed to connecting those who want to help with meaningful opportunities to make an impact in Los Angeles. Their vision for Sustainable Joy is to create lasting, sustainable support for the community while sparking joy and resilience in the face of adversity.

Hong Kong Watch defends human rights, freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Watch is a [UK registered charity](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1180013&subid=0) founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.

We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. We do this through a combination of in-depth research reports, regular topical briefings, opinion editorials, media briefings and interviews, and advocacy campaigns.

We also help integrate, support, welcome and strengthen the capacity of the Hong Kong diaspora, through a programme of civic and political education and community engagement.

Open Doors English is an English as a Second Language Program for adults in Ithaca, NY. All students are welcome!

Open Doors English's mission is to “offer English classes so that adults can participate fully in community life, advocate and care for themselves and their families, and pursue their goals.” Our student body is comprised of immigrants, refugees, asylum-seekers, farm workers, and temporary residents. All students are welcome, and ODE has served 200-300 students per year since opening in 2019.

The **Promise of Justice Initiative** (PJI) is a New Orleans-based decarceration organization that stands at the forefront of the fight for the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of those targeted and touched by the criminal legal system and mass incarceration.

PJI is a different kind of civil rights organization; we don’t follow any national agenda or framework. We confront issues and take on cases that, very often, no other organization will venture to challenge. Our work requires **deep investments of time, energy, creativity, and collaboration** with partner organizations, legal and community stakeholders, and those most directly impacted by the criminal legal system. Our work **blurs the traditional lines of litigation and advocacy** as we develop and execute novel legal and engagement strategies to attack seemingly intractable problems.

Our methodology is **client-centered and community-partnered**. We use power building, narrative construction, and storytelling as core vehicles. Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit advocacy organization and legal service provider. 

S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, working to abolish local governments’ systems of mass surveillance. The Civic Circle empowers students students to understand and participate in democracy through music and the arts.

The Civic Circle launched in 2018 to empower low-income students with civic skills, lift youth voices through the arts, and close a well-documented equity gap in civic learning and engagement.

Since then, we’ve reached more than 5,000 underserved students with our after-school workshops, assembly shows and community civic events. The heart of our program is seven civic skills we call “steps to democracy”— Listen, Learn, Choose, Join, Speak, Act and Lead. In other words, be a compassionate, informed, engaged citizen.

Civic learning correlates to better school performance, and college and career readiness. Students in our programs do Social Studies and service-learning activities, and work with teaching artists to create and perform their own civic songs, poems, and art pieces. The concept of whistleblowing is sacrosanct in democratic societies. But today the act of whistleblowing is both less effective as a means of checking power and more precarious for the individual who comes forward. We as a society must re-think and re-engineer whistleblowing to keep up with a world where society's power brokers in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC face little to no oversight and wield dangerous weapons against individual whistleblowers and journalists.

Psst… addresses the threat to whistleblowing by shifting it from an individual pursuit to ***collective action***. Collective action diffuses the risks associated with whistleblowing while also increasing the impact of disclosures.

The mechanism for doing so is the Psst Safe, a secure repository where insiders can record their concerns, whether big or small, in a repository while protecting their identities. Individual deposits in the repository are vetted for authenticity and analyzed to uncover patterns among deposits. Patterns are used to create complete stories and/or legal cases; depositors are given the option to be part of the collective, always with legal and safety measures in place.

Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS) 

CANVAS (Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies) was founded in 2005 by Slobodan Djinovic and Srdja Popovic to advocate for the use of nonviolent resistance in the promotion of human rights and democracy. Since then, they have worked with pro-democracy activists from more than 50 countries. From CANVAS' headquarters in Belgrade, Serbia, they operate a network of international trainers and consultants with expertise in building and running successful non-violent movements. Their work is focused to build more just, democratic, and responsible society. CANVAS’ offices in Washington DC, Tbilisi, Manila Johannesburg and Belgrade aim to provide maximum support to the activists on the ground, and they serve as a hub for local and regional initiatives that rely on principals of nonviolent struggle and creative activism. Their organization disseminates knowledge through a variety of media, including workshops, books, videos, and specialized courses and all for free. CANVAS has produced several publications on nonviolent resistance over the years, based on intensive research and our members’ decades of experience in the field. MAD delivers a 18-year-long intervention to Children in Need of Care & Protection (CNCP) in India that has the proven capability to enable them to break the cycle of poverty in a single generation. MAD has pioneered a community-powered social protection system that mobilises the community to provide high-touch and highly scalable, age-appropriate progression mentoring.


**History:** Started in 2006 in 1 city with 70 volunteers & 120 beneficiaries, today, Make A Difference (MAD) is a network of over 2,000 volunteers mentoring 3200 children & youth across 18 cities, annually.

Over the last 18 years, we’ve mobilised over 20,000 volunteers who have played their part in helping India’s most vulnerable children succeed academically, socially, and professionally.

 **Vision:** Children born into intergenerational poverty are able to break the cycle in a single generation.

**Mission:** Empower communities to take radical responsibility for their most vulnerable children and ensure they get the care & support needed to break the cycle of poverty permanently in a single-generation



**Goal:**

Our goal is to eradicate poverty in our lifetime. We achieve this by building a nationwide network of empowered communities that act as safety nets and springboards for children in need of care and protection. 

Through our proven **Progression Mentoring Program**, communities can provide step-by-step guidance, empowering children to cross the life-changing **empowerment threshold of $360 (INR. 30,000) per month** and leave poverty behind, permanently.

 

**Activities:**

It is a **community-powered, volunteer-driven program** for age-appropriate growth & development that enables a group of young people in the community to self organise to provide the required care, skill building and resource to the most vulnerable children in the community.

**One-on-one mentoring** by young individuals, guiding children through critical life stages, has the highest success rate in healing from **ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)** and bridging the gap left by struggling parents.

 It’s also the fastest way for India’s vulnerable children to break free from poverty permanently. While it typically takes **7 generations** for a family to escape poverty in India, with personalised mentoring, it can be achieved in just **one generation.**



**Program Delivery:**

MAD delivers Progression Mentoring through a **Community Organising model,** empowering young leaders to mobilize community members into active citizens. Community Organisers do this by forming chapters of 200 volunteers and children. Each chapter provides weekly mentoring to 200 vulnerable children from the **age of 10 to 28 at no cost to the child.**

 Our **service-based leadership development curriculum**, led by Community Organisers (CO), guides chapter leaders in sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, managing, and retaining mentors.

The largest nonprofit, non-partisan voting registration and get out the vote (GOTV) technology platform in America. It has registered more than 3.3 million new voters, verified 8.2 million voters’ registration status, and has helped over 30 million website users by providing registration links and deadlines, polling location details, and other essential voting information for each state. Vote.org also leverages its SMS-based GOTV program each year, targeting low-propensity voters in regularly scheduled and special elections.

To turn out the vote among young people and people of color, Vote.org partners with corporations and other organizations in the civic space, including Gannett Media Group's USA Today, Vote Save America, and The Andrew Goodman Foundation. Vote.org has also launched exciting new partnerships in 2020 with The Webby Awards, NAACP Youth Coalition, GLSEN, wikiHow, and Young Entertainment Activists. Many of their corporate partners have signed on to Vote.org's Election Day campaign, launched in 2018, which commits them to giving their employees paid time off to vote on Election Day. Vote.org was originally founded as Long Distance Voter (LDV), which served as a comprehensive online resource for absentee ballot information. LDV had 500,000 viewers within six months of its 2008 launch, and in 2014, it was the official source of data for Google's "How to Vote" project, which received over 30 million views.

In 2016, LDV rebranded itself as Vote.org, with funding and support from the Y Combinator. That fall, Vote.org ran its first-in-nation SMS peer-to-peer voter registration drive, and on Election Day 2016, Vote.org ran the single largest non-partisan SMS GOTV drive in America, providing polling location information to over 1 million low-propensity voters.

With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in America, Vote.org recently added a page to its website, offering regularly updated, state-by-state information for voters whose primaries have been postponed or otherwise delayed. As the pandemic creates new barriers to safe and fair elections, Vote.org is working to keep voters engaged in the democratic process and prevent misinformation from dissuading them from participating in the 2020 election.

With its new leadership team, led by CEO Andrea Hailey, Vote.org is on track to serve 12 times the number of people it served in 2018. Humans On The Loop is a transdisciplinary inquiry into the nature of agency in our age of automation.

In our AI-infused society, the gap between imagination and “reality” is smaller than it’s ever been — and now it’s time for humankind to graduate from asking if our dreams are possible to asking how we can dream better. This means cultivating deeper self-awareness, more discipline and humility, and a better metaphysics of technology to help us wield these new superpowers. But decades into a period of rapid information scaling, our grasp of consensus reality and executive function have eroded, causing an epistemic crisis. The wicked problems of this century require coordination at unprecedented scale, but our greatest natural resource — attention — has worn even thinner than our topsoil. How do we regenerate it and restore the faculties we need to be good stewards of this new ecology of minds?

Navigating the challenges that come with new information technologies is a group exercise and demands inherently plural approaches. The right response to tools that amplify our biases is to lean in with curiosity and play, not fearI have spent two decades studying and synthesizing  perspectives on intelligence and technology, innovation, and human-technology co-evolution…as well as testing bleeding-edge creative tools in public, helping cultivate systems literacies for navigating transformation, and fostering a massive network of mentors and collaborators with whom I share a devotion to the cultivation of a healthy Biosphere and Technosphere. As AI comes of age, this is the moment to recruit as many of them as we can into a multimodal public inquiry on wisdom and technology, power and responsibility, holistic practices for cultivating saner futures…and how we can keep Humans On The Loop and at the wheel.

News Decoder is a nonprofit registered in France. Our vision is a world where every young person participates in shaping a better tomorrow for themselves, their community and the wider world. Through past and present partnerships with nearly 50 schools in 20 countries on five continents, we teach and model the tools and techniques of journalism that help young people better understand complex international issues, hone their voices and viewpoints and turn their ideas in to meaningful social action.

Rebuilding our communities through committed relationships centered on love, compassion, and consistency.

Community Passageways (CP) is a Seattle-based nonprofit founded in 2017 with a vision for zero youth incarceration. We create alternatives to incarceration for youth and young adults by rebuilding our communities through committed relationships centered on love, compassion, and consistency. 

We: 

• Create alternatives to the carceral system through rebuilding our communities. 

• Serve primarily Black and brown youth and young adults in King County by connecting them to Ambassadors with shared life experience. 

• Believe criminalization and ostracization are ineffective deterrents to unproductive behaviors; and the carceral system further harms people who have already been negatively impacted by trauma.

Community Passageways (CP) is leading the way in reimagining and actively creating an alternative to today’s criminal legal system. 

Over the last 20 years in Seattle, we have seen a sharp decline in the number of young people in detention. But even as the overall number decreased, our current juvenile legal system has a disproportionately harmful impact on youth of color, particularly black youth. While only 10% of King County’s 2 million residents are black, they now make up almost half of the detention population on any given day, and more than half of felony offenses.

We have a four-pronged approach to community justice: 

- Prevention: Keep youth on a good path. Show them new paths.
- Diversion: Keep people out of the prison system and in community.
- Support: Support people already in the prison system.
- Reintegrate: Ensure a smooth, successful integration into the community.

Our community-centered and evidence-based model provides an alternative to the current criminal legal system.  We collaborate with families, schools, the court system, correctional center staff, religious institutions, policy makers, and community members to support adolescent youth of color. We provide youth mentors and access to programs focused on personal healing, identity development, and leadership building.

We employ men and women from the community who share similar racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds with our young people who have lived experience navigating the full spectrum of the school-to-prison pipeline to act as credible messengers and Ambassadors. Our Ambassadors work with heart, humility, and compassion, to lead community and school-based healing circles, individual and family case management, court advocacy, and youth leadership opportunities. 

Young people kept in the community through their dedication and our support have gone on to enroll in college, start businesses, graduate from high school, and help rebuild our communities.

**About LKO:**
Lakhon Komnit Organization (LKO) is a grassroots Cambodian theatre group, dedicated to the inclusion of marginalised people and unheard voices. *Lakhon Komnit* means “Thinking Theatre” in Khmer language: our work encourages people to reflect on reality, to think deeply, and to practice making positive change. We have seen how this equips people with the knowledge and skills that enable them to improve their own lives.

Founded as an informal theatre group in 2017, LKO became a registered NGO in 2019 (Registration Number: 9605 ប្រក).

**Our approach:**
From our base in Battambang, we run workshops, projects and performances which engage marginalised people as participants, creators, performers and audience members:

- **THEATRE FOR EMPOWERMENT: tackling violence against women and girls**
Our Women's Group are survivors of domestic violence who trained with us and now engage communities through performances and participatory workshops. They empower women and girls who are vulnerable to Gender-Based Violence with knowledge about their Rights and opportunities to connect with fellow victims and survivors. Simultaneously, they offer non-judgemental spaces for men to gain critical awareness of the role gender norms play in perpetuating abuse, and offer a safe space to reflect on their own behaviour and future ambitions.

- **THEATRE FOR PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION: training programs** 
After a successful pilot program in 2024, we are now ready to roll out a training series targeting Cambodian youth (19-30) in using theatre to explore conflict and resolution. By offering space for the participants to identify their own issues of concern and supporting them to represent their experiences through theatre, we aim to engage and up-skill the next generation of practitioners of theatre for change.

- **THEATRE FOR PROBLEM SOLVING: bespoke performance creation and touring**
Working as an implementing partner to international NGOs, we create compelling theatre to engage at-risk communities on a variety of development themes. We have partnered, to name a few, with Mines Advisory Group to tackle the dangers of landmines and other unexploded remnants of war, with Samaritan's Purse to address human trafficking, and with Oxfam in Cambodia on a variety of gender disparity and social exclusion issues. Our team of experienced performers are all from disadvantaged backgrounds themselves, making them well-placed to engage marginalised audiences in reflection and discussion about what they are facing and how they would like it to change. We perform in non-conventional theatre spaces: on the roadside in remote villages, in school playgrounds, addiction rehabilitation centres and pagodas.

- **TRAINING OF TRAINERS**
We offer bespoke training packages for those in or recently moving into community-facing roles, such as: de-miners, teachers, social workers, and various NGO front-line staff. Through 1-3 day courses, we support them to reflect on, adapt and refresh established training curriculum material, to acquire skills for designing and facilitating participatory learning, and to gain the confidence required to apply these dynamic approaches in the course of their work.

PowHer New York is a network of individuals & 100+ gender justice organizations collaborating to attain economic equity for women.

**PowHer** **New York (PowHerNY), a 501c3 since 2015,** **inspires change, catalyzes collective action, and advances gender and racial justice by:**

- **Connecting** “women’s issues” like Child Care, Reproductive Rights, Violence, Equal Pay to build intersectional collaborations;
- **Educating** the public, media and leaders about combating gender and racial inequality;
- **Convening** advocates and leaders to explore and develop new approaches and innovative strategies;

Powher New York

Advancing racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color.

EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. Organizing for safety, power, freedom, and opportunity, EBC advances the self-determination of the people most impacted by the criminal justice system.

Ella Baker Center for Human Rights

GirlTREK is one million Black women walking to heal our bodies, inspire our daughters and reclaim our neighborhoods. 


GirlTREK began with a simple but life-saving promise between two friends: to walk their way to better health and inspire others to do the same; and it is now a grassroots movement powered by everyday women. We are the women we serve. Now, GirlTrek is mobilizing this constituency for its boldest mission yet: a Care Crusade to extend Black women’s life expectancy by 10 years in a decade. These bold campaigns—scaling to 5 million members, establishing community wellness hubs “Care Villages”, training a Blue Brigade of health responders, and advancing policies to dismantle systemic barriers—will build lasting systems of care and inspire future generations.
