Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW)
Since its foundation in 1808 by royal decree, the KNAW is at the heart of scientific research in the Netherlands. As the country’s major institution for science and scholarship, its role is unique and multifaceted: fostering a prestigious community of scholars including Nobel Laureates, offering independent advice to our government, and conducting groundbreaking research through its renowned institutes.
The KNAW embraces the whole spectrum of scientific disciplines in the Netherlands, from humanities to (bio)medical, and social sciences to natural sciences. We promote, support, and recognize excellence in science, and translate research into concrete benefits for society. The KNAW advocates scientific inquiry and knowledge, and highlights their crucial role. International collaboration is vital when addressing the challenges of our time. We seek to amplify science's impact on policy and create pathways to solutions on an international scale.
At the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) we believe in the power of science, the arts, and young talent to shape a better future. Together we can advance knowledge, inspire creativity, and tackle the challenges of our time for the benefit of all.
Young Academy
As part of the KNAW, The Young Academy is dedicated to the future of science. 50 passionate academics champion the value of science and work to improve the scientific system by conducting research, disseminating knowledge, and bringing people together, with a strong focus on early-career scientists.
Bridging Science and the Arts
The KNAW is also home to the Society of Arts. This community promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on the role of the arts in society, exploring the relationship between science and the arts. It is a vital platform in the Netherlands for artists to voice their perspectives, highlighting the transformative power of creative - scientific collaboration.
Private Funds and Prizes
The Academy’s work is supported by private named funds, established by individuals who recognize the critical role of science in society. These funds help the KNAW to support academic development, encourage early-career scientists, and celebrate outstanding achievements through various prizes and awards. Without these contributions, the KNAW would not be able to fulfill its mission.
NIAS Fellowship Fund
One of the ways we realize interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research is through NIAS Fellowships: an intellectual haven where scholars, artists, writers and journalists work together in an collaborative environment.
