Using urban surplus as a solution to ignored issues of rural India
Goonj, founded in 1999 by Magsaysay award winner Mr. Anshu Gupta, works on poverty alleviation, rural development, and disaster relief & rehab, by using the cities’ discards as fuel for wide-spread development work across villages in India, creating a barter between two new currencies - the urban underutilized material, and, the efforts of rural communities who work on the neglected issues around water, sanitation, agriculture, education, local infrastructure, access, etc. Working with a strong network of 600+ grassroots partners, in the last 8 years (2014-2022), they have reached out to more than 12 million people, facilitated 55,000+ development activities, and channelized more than 45 million kgs of material across 31 states & UTs of India.

Goonj Disaster Relief: Urgent Appeal for Floods & Landslide
We are there... Need you too... The monsoon has already unleashed widespread distress across India. Relentless rains have triggered widespread floods, landslides, leading to large-scale damages and displacement of people across many regions. Communities in Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal and several other states are among the worst affected. Lakhs of people have seen their homes, crops, and livestock washed away, with livelihoods deeply disrupted. The widespread devastation highlights the urgent need for immediate relief and long-term planning for flood resilience across India. Goonj is initiating a two-phase response: Phase 1: Immediate Relief - Distribution of Disaster Rahat Kits (clothing essentials, hygiene items, toiletries, dry Ration, etc.) & School Kits (notebooks, stationery items, repurposed school bags, etc) in different affected regions of India. Phase 2: Rehabilitation - Community-led rebuilding through Goonj's rural development model. We appeal for urgent action.
