Ten years ago, my wife Patricia and I had a big dream to start World Central Kitchen. We envisioned an organization that would create smart solutions to hunger and poverty, and for many years we saw an amazing impact through our clean cookstoves initiative, culinary training programs, and social enterprise ventures that empower communities and strengthen economies. But we had no idea we would one day be answering the call in Puerto Rico and around the world – “Food First Responders” serving millions of meals each year. In the process, we learned that a small NGO can change the world through the power of food.

Last year, WCK activated in response to dozens of disasters — some of them natural, and some man-made. From serving children in the shelters on our border with Mexico to making deliveries by lamplight to those keeping watch over beaches in Indonesia, our fight to feed the hungry has taken us to more places than we ever expected.

At the same time, WCK continues planting roots in the communities where we work. Our Plow to Plate program is helping to create food resiliency in the face of future disasters. In Haiti, aspiring chefs are obtaining the skills and confidence they need to elevate their careers and the country’s tourism sector.

The Food Bank continues to do the day-in and day-out job of making sure vulnerable neighbors get the food they need. Now, we are putting solutions in place, one by one, to be able to continue providing food and helping our community prepare for whatever challenge the COVID-19 presents.

Every year, the Food Bank works with poverty and hunger researchers to try to understand the food needs of low-income San Francisco and Marin residents. This report, called ‘Missing Meals in San Francisco and Marin’ is a look at the meals we provide to our community’s low-income residents through nonprofit and government food programs, and how many more meals are still needed to fill the gap.

This research provides a rigorous assessment of trends in the food landscape in both San Francisco and Marin Counties, and the role of government and nonprofit food providers in meeting ongoing food needs.  The report finds that there are a staggering 35 million missing meals in our service area, meaning that despite historic gains in our local social safety net, we still have much more work to do in our fight to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin.

Give2Asia’s disaster response program funds both immediate needs and long-term recovery. Currently, our funding priorities in the Philippines include:

Caritas Manila 

Caritas Manila, through its Caritas Damayan Program, works through local parishes to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Project Damayan needs funds for food relief packs and hygiene kits. Caritas is also looking at expanding support to include livelihood assistance for beneficiaries with selling experience. With the capital assistance, beneficiaries are given the freedom to propose his/her desired livelihood. When the proposal is feasible and can be helpful to the family of the beneficiary, they will be provided a capital assistance worth five thousand pesos (5,000) for each family.

Philippine Business for Social Progress 

PBSP's COVID-19 efforts are focused in 3 areas:

• Food pack distribution: Php 750/$15 a pack, with rice, vegetables, dressed chicken/fish, monggo, eggs, sourced from partner farmer cooperatives
• Reusable masks sponsorship via Mask4AllPH: a pack of 10 face masks (P300/$6) for urban poor families. These masks are made by community sewers from Quezon City and Cavite.
• Learning continuity: P25K/school package ($500) consisting of 100 reams of bond paper (or ink when needed) plus the year-long data load for 2 teachers for selected schools.

PDRF helps families that were economically displaced by the pandemic through distribution of groceries/grocery vouchers. For this, PDRF engages with other non profits such as Caritas Manila and ABS CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc.

Save the Children (Philippines)

Save the Children provides specialized support to different areas in the Philippines depending on the priorities identified by the communities. These are determined through needs assessment via consultation and online surveys. Areas of support include hygiene kits, installation of handwashing facilities, meals for frontliners, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment or PPEs. Save the Children also provides information, education, and communication materials on good hygiene, health, education, child protection, parenting tips, and at-home-activities to help families cope with the crisis.

Teach for the Philippines

Teach for the Philippines raises funds for Learning Community Microgrants for partner schools. Microgrants typically funds school-based remediation programs, capacity building programs for teachers, and bridging programs for disadvantaged students. Grants also support mobile data subsidies, purchase of Wifi modems and additional printer ink cartridges.

Save the Children is India’s leading independent child rights NGO. It works in 12 Indian states and has reached more than 10.1 million Indian children since 2008. They run programs in the remotest corners of India and urban areas to provide quality education and healthcare, protection from harm and abuse and life-saving aid during emergencies to children. Their COVID-19 response work focuses on:
 •	Procurement and distribution of PPE materials to hospitals

•	Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) is an experienced humanitarian organisation that enables community resilience through practical solutions in the areas of disaster readiness, response and rehabilitation. During COVID-19, their activities include:
•	Providing supplies of masks and soap to 20,000 families at INR 1,000 per family
•	Supporting 100 district health facilities in seven states with essential supplies at INR 1,00,000 per facility
•	Building awareness campaigns at INR 300 per person to raise public health awareness INR 300 per person
•	Providing accurate public health information to 100,000 people from seven states to date

Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA)

SNEHA works at the community level to empower women and slum communities to be catalysts of change in their own right and collaborate with existing public health systems and health care providers to create sustainable improvements in urban health. Their COVID-19 response activities include:
•	Support frontline health workers with supply of masks and sanitizer bottles
•	Education on preventative health measures
•	Advocacy with the government to ensure continuity of health services
•	Online training for frontline healthcare workers
•	Distribution of food rations

Gramalaya Trust

Gramalaya was established in 1987 with the goal of working for the amelioration of socially downtrodden people under the integrated rural development approach. Currently, Gramalaya is working in five Southern States including Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Pondicherry. Their COVID-19 activities include:

•	Distributing basic medical equipment, such as pulse oximeters and infrared thermometers
•	Distributing PPE to health workers: masks, respirators, face shields, goggles, etc.
•	Providing hygiene kits (masks, soap, sanitizers, etc.) to vulnerable communities

In the U.S., Direct Relief is delivering protective masks – along with exam gloves and isolation gowns – to health care organizations in areas with confirmed COVID-19 cases.
In China, Direct Relief has delivered via FedEx more than 30,000 pounds of protective gear — nearly 800,000 N95 and surgical masks, more than 400,000 gloves, and numerous coveralls, face shields, and shoe covers — to frontline health workers.
Direct Relief is also staging personal protective equipment with regional response agencies across the world, including in the Caribbean and South America through the Pan American Health Organization.

Noora Health is focused on improving patient outcomes in public health systems in India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia by training the family caregivers of patients admitted to government hospitals - making them an integral part of healthcare delivery. They develop high quality training and education materials (videos, flipcharts etc) delivered through a train the trainer model for healthcare professionals to use in-hospital to upskill and train the family and patient. Over half the female population lives below the poverty line ($3.10/day), less than 50% of girls are educated beyond primary school level, and young women in urban areas are more likely to be unemployed than any other group. Meanwhile, Kenya has an alarming lack of skilled designers and construction professionals and booming demand for urban development, particularly housing. This high-potential sector is currently male-dominated, with women representing less than 3% of those it employs. By the end of this century, 40% of the global population will reside in Africa. By 2030, more than half of Africa's population will reside in cities. We are working to ensure that women actively contribute to and benefit from this urban development. Our solution: Buildher recognizes an opportunity in this problem. We designed and deliver an innovative technical training and employment program exclusively for low income earning women that produces semi-skilled artisans and places them with construction industry employers. Our model is designed by women, for women: It enables participants to earn as they learn, significantly increase their earnings, and secure a professional certification that creates opportunities for career growth. Our goal: Buildher will train and empower thousands of Kenyan women through construction.
