Partners In Health is a social justice organization that responds to the moral imperative to provide high-quality health care globally to those who need it most. We strive to ease suffering by providing a comprehensive model of care that includes access to food, transportation, housing, and other key components of healing. We bring the benefits of modern medicine to those who have suffered from the overt and subtle injustices of the world, in the past and in the present. We refuse to accept that any life is worth less than another.

Our mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. By establishing long-term relationships with sister organizations based in settings of poverty, Partners In Health strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair.

We draw on the resources of the world’s leading medical and academic institutions and on the lived experience of the world’s poorest and sickest communities. At its root, our mission is both medical and moral. It is based on solidarity, rather than charity alone.

When our patients are ill and have no access to care, our team of health professionals, scholars, and activists will do whatever it takes to make them well—just as we would do if a member of our own families or we ourselves were ill.

Our Core Beliefs:
-    All human lives have the same value, and every human being has the inalienable right to be healthy to fulfill their potential.
-    The right to health is not the only right held by our patients. Other fundamental human rights are interrelated and just as inalienable.
-    All people need to stand in solidarity with those who find themselves at the margins of modern society.
-    The playing field needs to be leveled for those individuals who are born at a disadvantage (equity vs equality).
-    Injustice is not accidental but a direct result of structural violence and oppression. We can fight injustice by changing those dynamics.
-    It is our moral call to action to expose social injustice and to work toward correcting those systemic forces that create inequalities, no matter how impossible or challenging this task might look.

Founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (WCK) is first to the frontlines providing fresh meals in response to crises. Applying our model of quick action, leveraging local resources, and adapting in real time, WCK has served hundreds of millions nourishing meals around the world. When disaster strikes, WCK’s Relief Team mobilizes with the urgency of now to start cooking meals for people in need. Second Harvest and our partner sites are the only grocery stores for the most vulnerable members of our community and one of few networks open as we "shelter in place."

During public health crises like the COVID-19 outbreak, kids and families on the brink of poverty are disproportionately impacted. When schools are closed and hourly wages are scaled back, the service we provide is even more critical. Yet we're facing unprecedented challenges ourselves, with rapid changes to our volunteer workforce and distribution networks.

As our community responds to the COVID-19 outbreak, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley remains committed to our mission knowing that our most vulnerable community members are deeply and disproportionately impacted by public crises such as this. We are in ongoing communication with our partners, staff and volunteers to maintain safe practices that will ensure nutritious food continues to flow into the community.

On Monday, March 16, 2020 food banks were officially named by the California Department of Public Health as an essential service provider. Because of this important inclusion in the CDPH’s guidelines, we expect to remain fully operational so we can continue serving our community.

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley

The Food Bank continues to do the day-in and day-out job of making sure vulnerable neighbors get the food they need. Now, we are putting solutions in place, one by one, to be able to continue providing food and helping our community prepare for whatever challenge the COVID-19 presents.

Every year, the Food Bank works with poverty and hunger researchers to try to understand the food needs of low-income San Francisco and Marin residents. This report, called ‘Missing Meals in San Francisco and Marin’ is a look at the meals we provide to our community’s low-income residents through nonprofit and government food programs, and how many more meals are still needed to fill the gap.

This research provides a rigorous assessment of trends in the food landscape in both San Francisco and Marin Counties, and the role of government and nonprofit food providers in meeting ongoing food needs.  The report finds that there are a staggering 35 million missing meals in our service area, meaning that despite historic gains in our local social safety net, we still have much more work to do in our fight to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin.

BETTER RESEARCH Fund innovative high-quality clinical research, basic science and artificial intelligence programs to identify best practices. The Biomedical University Foundation arises from the awareness that the future of University Institutions depends very much on their financial independence which cannot be based exclusively on ever more tightly controlled public funding or on occasional acts of philanthropy. The pursuit of excellence has high costs and necessarily leads to plans to finance long-term projects. Looking ahead, scientific and economic research and clinical health activity will become increasingly fascinating but also more challenging and competitive. At Noora Health, we believe no human being should suffer because of a preventable medical condition.

Noora Health is focused on improving patient outcomes in public health systems in India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia by training the family caregivers of patients admitted to government hospitals - making them an integral part of healthcare delivery. They develop high quality training and education materials (videos, flipcharts etc) delivered through a train the trainer model for healthcare professionals to use in-hospital to upskill and train the family and patient. They also have a post-discharge follow-up on mobile (via WhatsApp, teletraining, and voice messages) that allows them to share content with families when they return home, be there in a moment of need, answer questions etc. 

They have seen remarkable outcomes – in a cohort of patients, the program reduced post-surgical cardiac complications by 71%, maternal complications by 12%, newborn complications by 16%, newborn readmissions by 56%, and newborn mortality by 18%.

### Our Approach to Grantmaking
We're not designed to be a frequent grantmaker; we are primarily an investment account until we reach an extraordinary time and opportunity. Until those moments arise, each year we will make small grants at less than 1% of the Fund's size to the best available opportunities we are able to find in that year. These small grants will build up our grant-making infrastructure and track record. Grant decisions will be made by a dedicated management committee, all with a strong network and expertise on how well-timed grant-making can safeguard the future.

About Buildher The problem: In Kenya, women are significantly disadvantaged both socially and economically. Over half the female population lives below the poverty line ($3.10/day), less than 50% of girls are educated beyond primary school level, and young women in urban areas are more likely to be unemployed than any other group. Meanwhile, Kenya has an alarming lack of skilled designers and construction professionals and booming demand for urban development, particularly housing. This high-potential sector is currently male-dominated, with women representing less than 3% of those it employs. By the end of this century, 40% of the global population will reside in Africa. By 2030, more than half of Africa's population will reside in cities. We are working to ensure that women actively contribute to and benefit from this urban development. Our solution: Buildher recognizes an opportunity in this problem. We designed and deliver an innovative technical training and employment program exclusively for low income earning women that produces semi-skilled artisans and places them with construction industry employers. Our model is designed by women, for women: It enables participants to earn as they learn, significantly increase their earnings, and secure a professional certification that creates opportunities for career growth. Our goal: Buildher will train and empower thousands of Kenyan women through construction. In the process, we will develop a replicable model for gender integration in our industry to deeply impact hundreds of thousands of women across the continent. Buildher equips disadvantaged women in Kenya with accredited construction skills leading to greater financial prosperity, changing male attitudes and promoting gender equality within the construction industry.

Gram Vikas Trust (GVT) came into existence as a result of the motivation and personal initiative of its founder, Mr. Ramesh Kasondra, to enhance the socio-economic status of the underprivileged people. Hailing from a rural family, the founder was no stranger to hardships faced by the underprivileged. Having overcome economic and social challenges, due to the backing and economic blessings from certain elder society leaders, the founder set out to do his best to make a positive difference in the lives of fellow underprivileged.

Working with a team of committed people, GVT’s aim has been to secure integrated development through people’s participation. The key areas identified for interventions include child rights, education, health and hygiene, sustainable livelihood, and women empowerment. At the heart of the responses to Coronavirus, we must care for those living at the margins of economic and political systems to follow the measures required to flatten the curve, curb the spread and begin the journey to healing. The Southern Africa Trust's work with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and social movements across 16 countries to support their immediate needs, while simultaneously mobilizing their voices to influence the response strategies that various governments are putting in place. We focus on  women in rural areas ,  ex-miners ,  informal and cross border traders ,  domestic workers ,  small scale farmers ,  migrant workers and refugees . Vulnerable communities urgently need fact-based guidelines, practical solutions, as well as linguistically and culturally contextualised information in order to ensure prevention, detection and protection from Coronavirus. The Trust is calling on philanthropic foundations, development agencies and corporates to answer the call of the vulnerable and the CSOs that serve them by giving responsive funding, financing and other resource donations. Clean Start is a social enterprise registered in 2015 in Kenya.  Clean Start is the only women-led organization in Kenya with 50 % of the staff being formerly imprisoned and supporting their fellow imprisoned women to get out of the trenches and get back on their feet post imprisonment.  Our vision is to Re-imagine futures and Re-claim destinies.  Our mission-Clean Start works with women and Children Impacted by the Criminal Justice System to restore their dignity and hope for a successful re-integration. Our strategic objectives

 Service delivery to restore dignity, and hope and facilitate successful reintegration. 
 Our target groups Imprisoned women, formerly imprisoned women, girls in the juvenile justice system, and children of imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women. Our interventions We offer pre-and post-release programs that support women and their children and girls as they return to their communities from prison, we provide them with psycho-social support and livelihood opportunities. We also advocate for systemic change within the Criminal Justice System. Our work begins inside prison, in the last 5 years, with our friends and partners, our outreach programs in and out of prison have impacted 4000 women by providing them with dignity packs and attitudinal and behavioural change training. The dignity packs have provided the dignity, respect, and self-esteem the women need. We are bridging the gap between prison and the community and ensuring we avoid the gaping trench in-between while putting the formerly imprisoned woman at the core of the strategic framework, program design, development, and implementation with progressive touch points with her children, family, and community. Clean Start supports successful reintegration and transition for women through  employment training, psycho-social support, entrepreneurship, and vocational training, enabling them to find sustainable livelihoods post-release.  We are a bridge for women leaving prison over stigma, isolation, pain and outrage, abandonment, depression, illness, and lack of economic and educational opportunities. We amplify the stories of resilience, hope, and change for formerly imprisoned women to support policy change and prison reforms. We achieve this by raising the government's accountability towards formerly imprisoned women as a marginalized group.
