Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Parksville, New York with a primary focus on rescuing and rehabilitating pigs, and in particular, pigs with special needs. Pig residents include abandoned, neglected, and abused pigs, and many of the residents are elderly, blind, obese, born with birth defects, or have other long term medical needs such as severe arthritis.
Todd Friedman formed Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary in 2018 after a simple property walkthrough turned into a rescue mission. While seeking a property to start an animal sanctuary, the timeline was shortened when an unexpected sound from a barn turned out to be an abandoned 4-month-old piglet. Arthur the piglet was legally surrendered and rescued that same day and the 77 acres property and associated buildings were purchased to become Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary.
In the years that Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary was formed, the existing land and buildings have been cleared of debris, repaired, and reconfigured, additional facilities have been added, the overall infrastructure has been greatly improved, and the acreage has been expanded to 79 acres by purchasing neighboring properties. About half of the property is currently maintained and are available for use by the animal residents, and the remainder is reserved for use by area wildlife.
