From conflict to co-existence: protect wildlife in Bhutan

Promoting human-wildlife harmony

Help 149 Bhutanese highlanders protect their lifeline—the yaks!

The highland communities of Bhutan lead a life that’s both rugged and breathtaking, herding yaks at jaw-dropping altitudes of over 4000 meters above sea level. But increasing human-wildlife conflict has made their lives harder. They spend sleepless nights guarding their yaks from snow leopards and the Himalayan wolves.

The highland community depends on yaks for livelihood. Thus, every yak lost is a serious blow to their daily sustenance. On an average, around 159 yaks, mostly the babies, are killed by wildlife.

Apart from impacting their livelihoods, this human-wildlife conflict leads to retaliatory killings of wildlife, disrupting biodiversity and mountain ecosystems.

Fortunately, the community has found a solution. Portable corral iron mesh has proved to be highly effective in protecting the yaks from wildlife. But not every family can afford this solution.

This is where you can make a difference. Donate now to help 149 Bhutanese highland families in Gasa, Haa, Bumthang and Trongsa districts to buy portable corral iron mesh.

Your contribution will not only safeguard the livelihoods of these remote highland communities but also protect wildlife from retaliatory killings, paving the path for human-wildlife harmony and help preserve the nomadic ways of life.
