The Lontar Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Jakarta, Indonesia, was founded for the purpose of promoting international appreciation of Indonesian culture, primarily through the translation and publication of Indonesian literature. Since its founding, Lontar has produced more than 200 books on Indonesian language, literature, and culture with translated literary work by more than 800 Indonesian authors. Because of Lontar, it is now possible to study Indonesian literature anywhere in the world through the medium of English. In addition to books, the foundation has also produced numerous documentary films on Indonesian writers and performance videos on Indonesian oral traditions.

Today, on so many fronts, philanthropy is called on to do more. Though I would be proud to sponsor a Lontar publication, I can at least make a token contribution to this valuable work.
