NIAD Art Center, located in Richmond, California, is a progressive art studio dedicated to promoting creative expression, independence, dignity, and community building for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the past 43 years, NIAD's Studio Arts Program has evolved to provide artists with time, materials, one-on-one mentorship, and media-specific expertise in various traditional and contemporary art forms such as painting, mixed media, fiber arts, ceramics, and printmaking. NIAD’s unique model encourages artists to take an active role in directing program decisions, curatorial processes, and public programming. Through its 23rd Street Studio and Virtual Studio online, NIAD facilitates an inclusive, collaborative environment where artists explore their creativity, connect with the community, and participate in numerous artistic opportunities both locally and internationally.
The Art Marketing and Exhibitions team at NIAD supports artists in developing and marketing their practices through exhibitions in NIAD's galleries, collaborations with museum and gallery partners, and various licensing and public art opportunities. Artists receive support for portfolio development, exhibition entries, and more, ensuring equitable access to opportunities. NIAD also fosters community engagement through research trips, events, and a robust advisory system where artists help shape the organization’s direction. By centering the voices of artists with disabilities, NIAD redefines accessibility in the contemporary art world, empowering artists to engage with peers and the public on their terms. Through its integrated Studio, Community, and Art Marketing programs, NIAD continues to champion the artistic visions of its community, ensuring alignment with artists' goals and lives beyond the studio.
