Marc Van Der Hout is the founder of Van Der Hout LLP, a firm recognized nationally for its litigation and advocacy on cutting-edge issues. Throughout his career, Marc has challenged draconian immigration policies through impact and individual litigation. He served as lead counsel in numerous successful class actions that provided a path to legal status for tens of thousands of noncitizens and their family members and has represented thousands of noncitizens in immigration court and at all levels of the federal court system. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a volunteer-based, non-government organization whose goal is to prevent animal cruelty through education, animal sheltering and advocacy, based in Quezon City, Philippines.

PAWS also runs an animal shelter for over 300 cats and dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. There, animals are rehabilitated in the hope of finding them new homes and a second chance at a good life.



There is also a low-cost clinic that provides veterinary services to the indigent community, including spay and neuter (kapon).

Marshall ROC -  Restoring Our Community  is a coalition of community organizations, funders, and government agencies bound together by the common interest: Helping our neighbors, particularly those who are most in need, recover from the Devastating Marshall Fire & Windstorms which destroyed over 1000K homes.  

Marshall ROC is led by its members, who are a dedicated community of volunteers and organizations, in collaboration with government representatives. Many organizations in the surrounding communities offered their help after the Marshall Fire. Coordinating these efforts is challenging, but important. Marshall ROC is structured as a Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG), which is a nationally recognized, tried-and-true method for coordinating limited money, muscle, and materials among multiple organizations, on behalf of individuals and communities impacted by disaster. The Marshall ROC Mission is to support and empower individuals and households affected by the Marshall Fire and windstorm to lead their own recoveries by identifying needs and coordinating assistance on their behalf

The mission of Marshall ROC is to support and empower individuals and households affected by the Marshall Fire and windstorm to lead their own recoveries by identifying needs and coordinating assistance on their behalf. Marshall ROC is a collaborative coalition of existing agencies and all Marshall ROC related services will be provided without regard to race, creed, color, gender, disability, religious or political affiliation, documentation status, or sexual orientation. 

Disasters are, by their nature, overwhelming. If it wasn’t overwhelming, we’d call it an “inconvenience,” not a “disaster.” The Marshall Fire and Windstorm is overwhelming. Our neighbors lost hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property and belongings. So many individuals and organizations have rallied to help and it is inspiring to see how engaged and supportive the communities responding to this disaster have been. However, it is now clear the need is greater than the available resources. Marshall ROC and its members will work to help as many people as possible, while managing community expectations.
One of the most important efforts of Marshall ROC is the launch and opening of the Marshall Fire Recovery Center, which is a centralized Louisville, CO location dedicated to expediting the access and delivery of disaster related support, services and resources to fire survivors in Superior, Louisville and Unincorporated Boulder County as they navigate the complexity of their recovery. The Marshall Fire Recovery Center will house the Marshall ROC office and provide spaces for mental health, rebuilding and technical programs, and the network of professionals who are all helping to support the impacted community as well as to facilitate coordination and collaboration among local, national and governmental organizations. The Navigating Disaster for Boulder County program, operated by Lutheran Family Services – Rocky Mountains, will also be located at the Center. 
The Marshall ROC Marshall Fire Recovery Center is a testament to the power of community and our coalition of organizations. We / Marshall ROC felt it was important the financing of this Marshall Fire Recovery Center effort should be separate from donations previously collected so as to not detract from funds raised for the direct support of fire families, and we’re exceedingly grateful to the many organizations who have contributed so far to  help us launch the Recovery Center and effort:

Marshall ROC - Restoring Our Community 

Ensures that all eligible immigrants understand and have access to the path to citizenship.

With a singular focus on increasing the naturalization rate in Massachusetts and beyond, Project Citizenship transforms the lives and futures of immigrants in the U.S.!  Our free legal services have enabled over 10,000 permanent residents to achieve U.S. citizenship since 2014.  By accepting the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, our new citizens achieve expanded opportunities, greater economic stability, family reunification, a voice in our democracy, and a deeper sense of belonging in this country.  We all benefit when immigrant groups are not isolated but are full participants in our social and civic life, creating more cohesive communities.

Project Citizenship focuses on those who would not be able to naturalize without assistance through the complex and lengthy process. We coach, we encourage, we inform, and we advocate for each client with the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) - from application to Oath of Allegiance.  We submit requests for waivers of the USCIS application fee and for special consideration for clients who are older or who have a disability. The Project Citizenship community includes over 1,000 attorney volunteers and many local organizations who partner with us. Our clients have a remarkable 95% success rate in achieving citizenship.  Our work is at the intersection of economic vitality, civic engagement, and social justice.

A joint project between VIVO Alliance and Integro Foundation to advocate for victims' rights. 

Background:
The Victims' Rights Advocacy & Accountability Project was inspired by Karla Hernandez-Rosario's exhausting legal battle for justice after she was brutally attacked and sexually assaulted in December, 2020. Her plea for basic human rights was overtly denied by continuous roadblocks in the Puerto Rican justice system, which unequivocally favors the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. It's been nearly two years since her horrific ordeal, and yet no progress has been made to incriminate her assailant. After consulting with several legal professionals, multiple assault victims faced with similar challenges, as well as many non-profit organizations battling the scourge of gender/sexual violence, Karla and her husband came to the conclusion that the problem is indeed systemic. In Puerto Rico, victims of crime such as gender violence and sexual assault have no constitutional rights in the criminal proceedings against their offenders. It is common knowledge that the Puerto Rico Criminal Justice System, for decades, has shown callous disregard toward victims of these types of crimes in their fruitless pleas for justice, leaving them to suffer relentless personal, emotional, and financial wounds.

Vision of Project:
To rectify the severe imbalance between the rights of criminal defendants against the absent rights of victims, VIVO Alliance must raise the necessary funding to collaborate with a team of legal and research professionals, whom Karla and her husband, Gerald, have connected with on their own personal battle for legal justice. These professionals, along with the help of the University of PR, shall implement a work-study program for students from the UPR Legal and Journalism departments. Together, they shall harvest critical information to create an in-depth, on-demand database that clearly defines the severe imbalance of Puerto Rico's legal justice

We aim to provide patient-centered programs for medically underserved communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Our first pain management hub (PMH) in sub-Sahara Africa is located at the University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH) - the flagship tertiary healthcare institution in Nigeria. Advocacy and public health policy reforms is a key area of focus for the foundation, hence the venture into rapid point of care SCD testing for new-born in low resource regions. 



Amoke embarked on a project to supply equipment and distribute a tried and tested drug intervention covering three regions of the country.

-	Transcranial doppler (TDC) machines - by partnering with Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), a stroke prevention programme covering three states (Ondo, Ekiti & Kogi) began. Upon the acquisition of the TCD machine during the year click here - sonography training for physicians and technicians commenced and a research program is currently being designed. The project made some traction during the year and it remains a free service benefiting 5 states in the region. Initial results were promising, and the necessary therapy commenced for high-risk patients.

-	Hydroxyurea - our aim to drive best practice to halt progression of the debilitating effect of SCD. Its use is shown to reduce the vaso-occlusive crises, stroke, infections, malaria, transfusions, and death in children with SCD. AF has provided Hydroxy FOC for patients at  the PMH @ UCH and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH).

AF will focus on the following areas in 2024.

-       A pilot SCD screening exercise was conducted in Nov for children at a local orphanage with an encouraging outcome. The plan is to expand the exercise and explore more cost-effective options in the future.

-	Direct Fundraising - AF has identified a couple of our patients who will benefit from urgent hip replacement surgeries due to complications from SCD referred to medically as Avascular Necrosis. The request for medical assistance.

-	Implementation Research - Amoke is engaged in evaluating the implementation strategies used to improve the uptake and sustainability of SCD prevention programs in SCD. The aim is to improve understanding in how to scale up and evaluate new and existing programs and use them to overcome barriers to treatment and prevention of vaso-occlusive crisis in SCD patients. The challenge is to ensure that patients who could benefit from these outcomes,  actually receive them.

For nearly fifty years, Middle Way House has been providing services to people in crisis. Today, Middle Way House provides empowering services such as emergency shelter; a 24-hour help and crisis line; on-scene advocacy; support services; and transitional and permanent housing solutions to support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Middle Way House also touches the lives of community members through our outreach education and prevention programs. Middle Way House serves the following six counties throughout south-central Indiana: Monroe, Greene, Lawrence, Owen, Morgan, and Martin counties.

Torture, summary executions, and enforced disappearances – the very archetypes of human rights violations. Torture is what we intuitively think of when someone mentions human rights. It is perhaps the epitome of human rights violations – frequently connected with summary executions, and enforced disappearances, the violations that ensure deprivation of all of the rest of our rights. 159 out of 193 UN Member States have agreed,  in principle … The absolute prohibition against torture is not just a moral position; it is binding international law, under the UN Convention Against Torture, and many other international treaties. But  in practice , in many of these same countries, torture continues unabated, impunity reigns, and in important discourses, the absolute prohibition on torture itself is being called into question. States are responsible the vast majority of torture that takes place ; and yet it is States that are bound to obey the Convention and eradicate torture. So, who polices the police ? Well, at least on torture, it is the local civil society organisations in the global anti-torture movement that are the key actors. Seeking truth, demanding justice, helping victims, and ensuring, through laws, that it never happens again. Put differently, progressive change finally achieving on-the-ground impacts against torture has never, and will never, happen without a frontline civil society push. However, operating individually, often in countries under authoritative regimes, anti-torture groups and organisations at the local or national level are often poorly resourced, often under direct pressure and threats , and insufficiently connected. The Clean Slate Initiative works to expand and automate the sealing of arrest and conviction records after people have completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time - believing everyone should have a shot at redemption.   

We are a national, bipartisan non-profit organization that builds advocacy campaigns where local, state, and national partners operate with the shared goal of passing Clean Slate laws in states and in Congress.

Through partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated advocacy campaigns, the Clean Slate Initiative unites businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country.

We support state-based campaigns with the goal of passing laws that ensure conviction and non-conviction records are automatically sealed once someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time. 

The Clean Slate Initiative supports campaigns that have clear goals, well-thought-out strategies, and a vision for building a base of support that can defend and sustain policy wins.

Since this initiative’s inception, we have helped pass legislation that provides a path for: 

- 2.3 million people to have at least one conviction or non-conviction cleared;

- 7.3 million conviction and non-conviction cases to be cleared; and

- 2 million people to receive full record clearance.

You may wonder - why is there a need for Clean Slate Initiatives? Here are the facts: 

1 in 3 adults in the United States have an arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to work, obtain housing, and engage in civic life. Having a record, even an arrest record, is a significant barrier to economic mobility. 

- 9 in 10 employers use background checks when hiring.

- 4 in 5 landlords use background checks on prospective tenants.

- 3 in 5 colleges and universities use background checks on prospective students.

There are more than 44,000 collateral consequences that limit the ability of people with a record to access meaningful opportunities to build a better life. Our work focuses on automating the process to remove those barriers, providing a real second chance for the millions who are currently impacted by an arrest or conviction record.

Aspen Colombia's main program "Leading Colombia 2050" (LC2050) is now in its third cohort, with around 24 fellows each. LC2050 consists of Socratic method-led seminars to discuss the question of how to build a better Colombia. The program also includes field visits to different realities in order to bring participants closer to the country´s challenges and to leaders and organizations succeeding at building a better society. Additionally, Aspen Colombia gathers leaders from specific areas to discuss pressing issues in Socrates Seminars. The last one was hosted in Medellin, Colombia around the question: Can Democracies fix Democracy? 
Although Aspen Colombia is an emerging organization, it has already summoned some of Colombia´s most impactful leaders, and LC2050 has begun to show results in the initiatives that fellows are spearheading.

Guided Assistance Program (GAP) - GAP provides personalized support and referrals for women and families facing difficult life challenges. The Center’s Referral Navigators work to directly connect participants to community resources spanning crisis services, social services, mental health, financial and legal services. Through GAP, a participant learns how to outline her personal or family needs and to create an action plan. Appointments are available via phone or by video via Zoom to meet one-on-one with an attorney to discuss your legal questions with regard to a civil, divorce, custody or other legal matters and to better understand your rights and the legal process.

If you are a person without access to a phone or computer or are living in a home where you fear your computer/phone use is being monitored you can come to the W&FLC and use a computer and phone. **Utthan's journey began in 1981**, when four women chose to work in the desolate Bhal region of Gujarat, helping marginalized communities to self-organise around critical livelihood issues. **It is a grassroots-based institution with a mission to empower women and young girls by providing them with the perspective, resources and tools they need to amplify their voice, gain access & control over productive resources, entitlements & services, and take control of their bodily autonomy.** To create systemic change and drive sustainable impact, Utthan also facilitates partnerships and synergies with various stakeholders and engages in evidence-based advocacy and policy dialogue while continuously taking up its own organisational development.  

**The Challenge being addressed**: Women and young girls face significantly disproportionate challenges due to social, economic, political & environmental marginalization. This creates overlapping & interdependent systems of oppression, discrimination & disadvantage. The **adverse impacts of poverty, hunger, resourceless-ness, violence & climate change on women and girls are most acute**. As a result, their voices are more than often ignored & silenced and their needs neglected. This adversely impacts their ability to take decisions at individual, household, community or societal level. This inequity is perpetuated in society & associated structures, as a whole. Any development or growth therefore remains inequitable, incomplete & unsustainable. 

**Path to address the impacts on women and young girls**: Utthan works on **building their agency** at individual, household, community & societal level through **enabling control over assets, body & voice**. This in turn enables them to shape their own destinies and provides them the confidence to partake in the **creation of a more just & equitable society**.

Prioritising community-based & community-led transformation has been pivotal in building a critical mass of local leaders; amongst women, men & youth. Utthan's practice areas are very much aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals & are demonstrative of grounded & women-led action to address women's human rights which are deeply intertwined with security, climate change, biodiversity, water security, resource distribution & governance issues. Presently, Utthan **directly** impacts the lives of over 8.5 lakh individuals in six districts of the western state of Gujarat in India. It aspires to scale this positive influence to at least 25 lakh individuals by 2027.

Forbidden Colours collects and raises funds to support initiatives that help LGBTIQ+ people to fully live their lives in freedom with self-respect and dignity in Europe. They are also a leading advocate in exposing anti-LGBTIQ+ initiatives in Europe, and therefore conduct extensive advocacy with media, EU-institutions and member states. 

Forbidden Colours is a NPO linked to a fund managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, the major Belgian public benefit foundation, whose mission it is to contribute to a better society. 

We want all LGBTIQ+ persons to be able to get up every morning feeling it is okay to be who they are. We use our extensive network in the European institutions, and in several member states of the EU, to address the backlashes on LGBTIQ+ rights. With our media contacts across the world, we expose anti-LGBTIQ+ initiatives. By putting pressure through the media, we were able to put several cases higher on the political agenda.

The organization is considered as one of the most effective organizations to protect LGBTIQ+ rights on the European level. By closely monitoring the geopolitical forces behind state-sponsored anti-LGBTIQ+ campaigns, Forbidden Colours was able to expose several European governments for scapegoating the LGBTIQ+ community as a deception for their anti-democracy campaigns. 

They revealed cases such as the anti-LGBTIQ+ propaganda law in Hungary, an anti-LGBTIQ+ education reform in Poland and the needs of LGBTIQ+ persons fleeing Russia's war with Ukraine in the international media. With this, Forbidden Colours has gained the attention of the world media and has been featured in amongst others The Guardian, VICE & Sky News. The non-profit has led a campaign aiming to take down Hungary's infamous anti-LGBTIQ+ propaganda law. After 1,5 year of campaigning by Forbidden Colours, the Hungarian government was taken to the Court of Justice of the European Union. For the first time in the history of the EU, a member state was taken to court on the basis of violations of human dignity and human rights. Forbidden Colours was also able to convince the largest group of member states ever to intervene in a lawsuit against another member state.   

They also help organisations from all over the world to advocate more successfully at the European Union institutions and, for example, also works with local partners on the EU Global Human Rights Sanction Regime. Besides its political advocacy work, Forbidden Colours also works with the corporate world to create a more diverse, equal and inclusive workplace. They give trainings, keynotes and develop projects to raise awareness to the issues of the LGBTIQ+ community within the company. They also develop 'corporate social responsibility'-projects about LGBTIQ+ rights together with the corporate world. This helps companies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

DETAINED ADULT PROGRAM
CAIR Coalition's Detained Adult Program (DAP) works with hundreds of adults who are detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Capital region. DAP provides information, legal support, and representation through trauma-sensitive, client-centered service and manages three sub-programs: the Legal Orientation Program (LOP), the Universal Representation Program (URep), and the National Qualified Representative Program (NQRP). 

DETAINED CHILDREN'S PROGRAM
CAIR Coalition's Detained Children's Program provides legal services to unaccompanied children detained by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in Virginia and Maryland, as well as those who are released locally to a sponsor in Virginia, Maryland, and DC. Clients range in age from toddlers to teens, and include pregnant and parenting minors. The program's services include Know Your Rights presentations, individual consultations, accompanying children to immigration court hearings and free representation, either in-house or with local law firms. Since January 2021, the number of unaccompanied children seeking humanitarian protection has been on the rise. 

When children arrive at the southern border, they are first placed in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is responsible for transferring the children to ORR custody within 72 hours. CAIR Coalition is the primary provider of legal assistance to detained children in DC, Maryland and northern Virginia who are held in local ORR facilities. CAIR Coalition continues to see a steady and significant increase in the number of children who are being transferred to the facilities in our region, with a detained population of approximately 150 children on any given week. The Children's Program also pioneered new forms of advocacy for children in secure detention, successfully facilitating the 'step-down' of multiple children to less restrictive placements..

IMMIGRATION IMPACT LAB
The CAIR Coalition Immigration Impact Lab (Lab) brings impact litigation within the Fourth Circuit to challenge barriers to the asylum, due process, and liberty rights of our immigrant neighbors who are at risk of detention and deportation. The Lab also works closely with major law firms, law school clinics, and local immigration and criminal bars to coordinate litigation on cutting-edge issues.

Our impact litigation priorities focus on challenging barriers to asylum, minimizing the immigration consequences of criminal convictions, and protecting due process rights for detained children and adults. The primary litigation tools we use are appeals of individual cases to the Fourth Circuit and Board of Immigration Appeals, individual lawsuits, and habeas petitions to challenge prolonged and unlawful detention of adults and children. 

SOCIAL SERVICES
CAIR Coalition's Social Services Program endeavors to provide a holistic model of service that addresses our clients' legal, as well as social services needs. From addressing immediate needs-such as housing, food, and clothing, and referrals to medical, mental health, and educational support services-to creating detailed post release plans with wraparound support, our goal is to help ensure that they have the best possible chance of achieving their legal goals and succeeding in their new homes.

The program is also responsible for leading the coordination of independent psychological evaluations. These evaluations can often provide context around mental health diagnoses, which help to identify targeted post release referrals to mental health services providers. The coordination process requires collaboration among legal staff, detention facilities, and our social services team. Mental health evaluations can shed light on any relevant psychiatric history, enabling us to provide our clients with appropriate social and legal services. Our program liaises between the legal team and independent mental health professionals by recruiting and retaining a pool of practitioners who are trained to diagnose, provide clinical and forensic evaluations, provide referrals for further treatment, and serve as expert witnesses in immigration cases, as needed.

Mosaic Georgia: a 24/7 Children's Advocacy & Sexual Assault Center for people who experienced sexual assault, abuse & exploitation

Mosaic Georgia has discreetly served over 20,000 kids and adults who experienced sexual violence, exploitation, trafficking, child sexual abuse, and similar crimes.  It began as a volunteer rape crisis center in 1986. In 1993, became the first nonprofit, community-based sexual assault center in Georgia to provide forensic medical exams and patient advocacy outside the hospital setting.

Mosaic represents our focus to help people put the pieces of their lives back together with dignity and discretion.  We offer a mosaic of services and coordinate with several agencies and organizations with a trauma-informed, victim-centered approach. We follow the Children’s Advocacy Center model to centralize the community response in effort to minimize trauma and stress on the person who may have experienced sexualized violence.  Also reduces the number of times the victim is asked to recount their experience.

DC KinCare Alliance supports the legal, financial and related service needs of relatives who raise DC children in times of crisis.

Fueled by high rates of parental incarceration, gun violence, addiction, and mental health problems, some 9,000 DC children live in homes with “relative caregivers.” DC KinCare Alliance is the only organization focused solely on serving these caregivers, who rise to the occasion when parents are not able. They often live at the margins of economic stability yet face an uphill battle in a system designed for traditional families, one that expects relatives to step in without aid. A team of lawyers works to support them (usually grandmothers; often disabled themselves), offering free legal representation and education, as well as assistance with obtaining identification and advocacy in acquiring effective health and mental health care, financial supports, and other services for the whole family. The only organization in DC focused on this population, DC KinCare Alliance helps those who have opened their homes and hearts to children in need.

CAMELEON develops a holistic approach to act on the causes and effects of sexual violence towards children and teenagers. 
 
CAMELEON  has been working in the Philippines for 25 years in order to facilitate the protection, healing and rehabilitation of young girls victim of sexual abuse (5-24 years old). 130 girls are currently protected and helped by CAMELEON : 76 of them are sheltered in our 3 centers based in Silay (Negros) and Passi City (Panay), while 54 girls continue to be guided after they left the center to go back to their families (if safe) or in welcome families accredited by social services. OUR MISSION About 7,000,000 children are sexually abused every year in the Philippines. More than 70% of sexually abused children are between 10 and 18 years old. Among those victims, 20% are under 6 years old. Cases of child sexual abuse are one of the most common issues that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has to handle after abandonment and neglect. Despite the Anti-Rape Law of 1997, rape remains the most frequent type of sexual abuse, followed by incest and fondling. CAMELEON offers general support to the young girls victim of sexual abuse (basic care, food, education, professional training) and psychological counselling to help them rebuild themselves. The families receive training in parenting to facilitate the reintegration of girls. It also provides legal assistance for the duration of the trial to the girls who wish to sue their perpetrators. The association supports its beneficiaries until the resolution of the conflict and their complete autonomy. Long-Term Impact Thanks to the project, 130 young girls victim of sexual abuse will rebuild themselves and will be resilient. They will build their future thanks to education and skills development. They will know their rights and invoke them in front of the court, which will help fight impunity. The families will change their behavior towards their daughters and promote Children's rights. The communities and local authorities will be mobilized together to prevent and deal with child abuse cases in these areas.
