  • Every year, our shelter takes in about 3,500 animals – not only dogs and cats, but also reptiles, birds, livestock, rabbits, horses, rodents, wildlife, and even fish!
  • We are an open admission shelter, which means we do not turn anyone away who is looking to surrender their pet. However, we offer alternatives and counseling to try and prevent the surrender, such as free behavior consultations, a pet food pantry, and other resources. These programs have helped reduce our intake by a whopping 24% in just two years, by keeping pets with the people who love them!
  • We are an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization, not a government agency or part of the Humane Society of the United States or any other organization. We rely on your support, so please donate locally!
  • We are the only municipal shelter in all of Harford County. That means we take in animals surrendered by citizens of our county, as well as stray pets found in Harford County and animals seized by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office of Animal Control as the result of hoarding, abuse, neglect, and dogfighting.  Many of these are in horrific shape and require extensive medical and behavioral rehabilitation.
  • We are the first place to call if you lose or find an animal in Harford County. We maintain a lost and found registry for animals in our county, so make sure we are your first call at 410-836-1090.
  • We have an active volunteer and foster program, and we love our wonderful “unpaid staff” who give so much of their time and energy to our animals and to make our jobs easier!  They're crucial to our success, so we're always looking for more great folks to grow these lifesaving programs!
  • Our website, www.harfordshelter.org, is chock full of info and resources, and we have a presence on social media outlets like Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram. Friend and follow us!
  • We support our first responders through our Hometown Heroes program! We waive adoption fees for all active or veteran military personnel, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, or EMTs with a current valid ID or other proof of employment.
  • Our Seniors 4 Seniors program matches amazing senior cats (10 years+) and senior dogs (7 years+) with caring senior adopters who are 62 years of age or older. To start your new relationship out on the right paw, adoption fees are waived.
  • If you are in need of experienced rodent control technicians, our Barn Cat Buddies program may be for you! We sometimes gets cats that, for various reasons, must live outside and will not thrive as indoor companion pets. Barn Cat Buddies are vaccinated, spayed/neutered and ear tipped.
  • We offer an eight-week puppy training course and an eight-week basic obedience course, in partnership with Mutt Magic Training Services. Classes are offered regularly at our shelter facility!
  • Over the course of the year, we offer our community 3 affordable Pet Vaccination & Microchip Clinics held at different locations throughout the county. While the clinics do not replace having a regular relationship with a veterinarian, pet owners can save a little money on their pet’s vaccines.
