The Fundació Joan Miró opened its doors in 1975 with the mission to establish an international centre of excellence on Miró in Barcelona, to promote research and studies on Miró and contemporary art, and to showcase its holdings. Over the years, the foundation has become a space in which every facet of art can be explored and experienced, a place where we can connect with Miró's thinking and work. The foundation takes an interdisciplinary approach and combines the organisation of temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century artists with academic activities and projects in partnership with other institutions and bodies around the world. The foundation is housed in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, an architect and urban planner and a great friend of Joan Miró's. Thanks to the fruitful dialogue and mutual understanding between the artist and architect, we have a unique building that is a perfect symbiosis between art, architecture and the landscape, a building that has become one of the cultural icons of Barcelona.
