Urgent Appeal for Action in Eastern DRC – Capture of Goma by M23 and Attack on Displacement Camp
It is with deep concern that we inform you of the tragic developments in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. On January 27, 2025, Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, was captured by M23 rebels, an armed group reportedly supported by Rwanda.
This escalation has triggered yet another wave of mass displacement among communities already devastated by years of conflict. Compounding the crisis, a bomb attack on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) resulted in numerous casualties, primarily affecting women and children.
This dire situation has significantly worsened the fragile conditions faced by displaced populations:
● More than 400,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since the start of this year alone.
● Families, already uprooted by past violence, are now fleeing again under deplorable circumstances.
● Survivors of the attack are grappling with severe physical and psychological trauma, with limited access to medical care.
● The displaced lack essential necessities such as clean water, food, shelter, and critical services, while ongoing insecurity hampers humanitarian efforts.
● Sexual violence continues to be weaponized, with women and girls as primary targets.
● A mass prison break has enabled perpetrators of sexual violence and other grave human rights violations to escape, heightening fears for civilian safety.
The women, children, and families of Eastern DRC are facing unimaginable suffering. Their resilience is being tested beyond limits. We urge you to join us in extending a lifeline of support and solidarity. Every contribution - small or big, every voice raised, can make a difference.
