Our main effort to date has been the creation and oversight of the Brumadinho Regenerative Fund (BRF), created in the heels of the breakage of the Córrego do Feijão mine, owned by Vale, in 2019. We raised R$150 thousand through a crowdfunding campaign and launched the fund as a means to support locally driven efforts, see https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/brumadinho for details. We have received 250+ applications and supported more than 60 projects, through a voluntary, participatory grantmaking process, led by members of the community.
This Friends Fund, seeks to support the creation and launch of the Nossa Cidade Fund for Belo Horizonte, which will replicate the successes of the BRF in the greater Belo Horizonte area, home to nearly 6 million people.
