Providing NYC Public Schools the Free Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced schools with the free faculty training, student resources, and program support necessary to start a sustainable student news publication program. Seeing a school newspaper or news site in every public school in New York City, in the form that’s best for that school and those students, is how our approach will and does make all the difference - and what every donation we receive goes toward.

For example!
$175 funds an in-school journalism writing, interviewing or photojournalism workshop.
$500 funds a stipend for a student editor-in-chief.
$1000 funds a stipend for a teacher adviser's extra time.
$2500 funds a year of workshops for students and advisers.
$5000 fully funds journalism training and resources for one school for a full year.

- Our 2022-23 Student Journalism Leaders Fellow Denisse Merino from Leadership and Public Service High School in Manhattan. Her first article in her school’s brand-new student news site, The Lead News, investigated the disappearance of senior trips post-COVID and resulted in [immediate action](https://leadnews.org/951/student-life/follow-up-to-senior-trips/ "https://leadnews.org/951/student-life/follow-up-to-senior-trips/") by the administration. 
- Jayleen Torres, a 2024-25 Student Fellow who joined The College Academy High School’s brand-new newspaper club as a sophomore. She helped inspire her teacher to create a full-credit journalism class at the Washington Heights school to support their news site, [TCA Heights](https://tcanews.org/ "https://tcanews.org/"), the next year.

Unfortunately, far too many New York City public schools still don’t have student newspapers — and most of the schools *without* news sites serve predominantly low-income students. Those are the schools we partner with at Press Pass NYC. We know these journalism opportunities help students sharpen their critical thinking and writing skills, while bolstering engagement and developing leadership. All students deserve to graduate as the informed, empowered adults a strong democracy needs.
