• Our 2022-23 Student Journalism Leaders Fellow Denisse Merino from Leadership and Public Service High School in Manhattan. Her first article in her school’s brand-new student news site, The Lead News, investigated the disappearance of senior trips post-COVID and resulted in immediate action by the administration. 
• Jayleen Torres, a 2024-25 Student Fellow who joined The College Academy High School’s brand-new newspaper club as a sophomore. She helped inspire her teacher to create a full-credit journalism class at the Washington Heights school to support their news site, TCA Heights, the next year.

Unfortunately, far too many New York City public schools still don’t have student newspapers — and most of the schools without news sites serve predominantly low-income students. Those are the schools we partner with at Press Pass NYC. We know these journalism opportunities help students sharpen their critical thinking and writing skills, while bolstering engagement and developing leadership. All students deserve to graduate as the informed, empowered adults a strong democracy needs.
