The MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM operates a small hospital in Fajara as part of their Clinical Services Department. This hospital has a reputation for high-quality healthcare which is hard to access in The Gambia, and provides general adult and paediatric medical services to members of the Gambian public as part of our corporate social responsibility and close relationship with the community. It also provides care to Unit staff, their family members and participants in research studies.

The queues are so long that some patients choose to arrive at the MRC Unit the night before and sleep on mats outside to ensure their place in the queue when The Gate Clinic opens the following morning.

Each year, 60 -75,000 consultations are undertaken in The Gate and outpatient clinics, and there are 1000 to 1500 admissions on the 40-bed ward. One third of our patients are children aged 15 years or under.

We offer a lifeline to our community, but due to limited resources, we can’t always help everyone. Our patients often struggle to cover test fees in good time while their health deteriorates. Therefore, to help those most in need, we have established The Gambia Patient Access Fund.

• £10 a month could pay for an echocardiogram, every month
• £50 a month could pay for a CT head scan, every month
• £100 a month could pay for one MRI scan, every month
• £150 a month could pay for one complex CT scan, with contrast, every month

Our School's global impact would not be possible without the crucial support of our community of committed donors and friends.
