Safe Water for Los Angeles

Situation

Five major wildfires continue to rage over Los Angeles County into Friday morning, with nearly 35,000 acres burned. These fires have resulted in at least 10 fatalities, the destruction of nearly 10,000 structures, and the evacuation of approximately 200,000 residents.

Residents around the greater Los Angeles area are at risk of hazardous conditions including poor air quality due to smoke pollution and water quality and access issues.

The sudden surge in water usage caused pressure drops in the water distribution system. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power issued boil water notices for areas affected by the fires, advising residents to use only boiled or bottled water for drinking and cooking. This precaution was due to potential contamination from ash, debris, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) caused by the thermal degradation of plastic within water distribution systems.
