Most towns in Colombia only have a general doctor in their hospitals, so people need to travel to main cities in order to access specialized medical services, diagnostic exams, treatments, and/or surgeries.
Additionally, many places in Colombia are only reachable by air or water (there are no roads to access them), so expenses to travel to main cities from these places are very high. The fact that people have to pay these travel expenses by themselves makes it unfeasible for them to access specialized medical services.
Our unique health model is implemented mostly in rural areas through medical brigades (3 days in length), in which we mobilize at least 50 volunteer health professionals and two tons of medical equipment and medicines in 10-15 planes. In each brigade, we care for an average of 800 patients and perform roughly 1000 specialized medical consultations (general medicine, optometry, dermatology, pediatrics, nutrition, ophthalmology, obstetrical ultrasound, odontology, gynecology) and at least 120 surgeries (general surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology). Most of our beneficiaries live in conditions of extreme poverty and have been affected by the internal armed conflict.
PAC is a private, non-profit, nonsectarian organization with 58 years of experience in bringing surgical, humanitarian, and emergency medical care to communities that live in conditions of poverty, extreme poverty, social or geographical exclusion, or that have been victims of armed conflict or some catastrophe.
