Afghanistan: we don't step back
Afghanistan deals with the consequences of four decades of conflict and the humanitarian crisis in the country is worse than ever. The economic crisis, drought, and other climate change-related problems exacerbate the fragilities associated with protracted internal instability and international isolation. Over 20 million people, more than half of the Afghan population, need urgent humanitarian assistance during 2024.
To deal with this extremely complex humanitarian crisis, INTERSOS’ strategy is to prioritize the most urgent humanitarian problems such as widespread food insecurity and malnutrition, which mainly affects children and women, the lack of access to health care, particularly for women – some rural areas are in fact more than two hours away from the nearest health facility – and problems related to the humanitarian protection of individuals or groups exposed to various forms of vulnerability and exclusion, and therefore more at risk of suffering physical and psychological damage.
We support communities in Kabul, Kandahar, and Zabul Provinces,
More specifically, in terms of health assistance, we provide medical consultations, medicines, referrals to specialized services when needed, support to the local health system on immunization, as well as maternal, emergency and trauma services. Moreover, our medical staff offers nutritional programs for children and pregnant and lactating women.
Additionally, in terms of protection, we ensure individual case management, mental health, and psychosocial support services. We support survivors of gender-based violence and promote economic and entrepreneurial support for women. Children’s safe spaces ensure a safe environment for minors at risk.
