Habitat For Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta

In 1985, Chrys and John Street met Millard Fuller, who challenged them to start an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in Cobb County, GA. They distributed brochures to local churches and gathered 12 people to form a Board of Directors. On April 1, 1986, Cobb County Habitat for Humanity was officially incorporated as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. In 2008, the organization expanded to include Douglas and Paulding counties and the name changed to Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta. Since 1986, over 500 homes have been built, rehabilitated, or repaired as part of our pursuit to provide decent, affordable housing in Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding counties.

We are driven by the vision that everyone deserves a decent place to live, and our mission states that: "Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope."

Our principles are to:

1. Demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ.
2. Focus on shelter.
3. Advocate for affordable housing.
4. Promote dignity and hope.
5. Support sustainable and transformative development.

Non-proselytizing policy:
Habitat for Humanity and its affiliate organizations will not proselytize. Nor will Habitat work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Habitat. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

People in your community and all over the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With our help, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.

Homeowners are selected based on:

1. Need for housing,

   • Your present housing is not adequate (unsafe, not maintained, overcrowded, and/or unaffordable).
   • You are unable to obtain affordable housing through other conventional means.

2. Willingness to Partner

   • You agree to complete 200 hours of sweat equity. Sweat equity hours are earned by helping to build your home alongside volunteers and doing community service.
   • You agree to complete 100 hours of homeowner education.

3. Ability to Pay

   • You have a steady source of income.
   • You have a positive monthly cash flow (net balance of cash on hand after expenses are paid).
   • You have good credit (based on your credit report, NOT your credit score).
   • Charged-off debts or debts in collection are $250 or less.
   • If you have declared bankruptcy, it must have been discharged for three years. If it was dismissed, you must have paid off all of the debts to the bankruptcy.

In addition to building new homes, we also have a Repair Program, in which we assist seniors and veterans on fixed incomes with home repairs to ensure they have a safe, warm, and dry home, as well as accessibility modifications if they are disabled.
