🏗️ Alcor's Engineering Equipment Wishlist
Alcor’s engineers have been working in a seriously cramped space -- and it's seriously cramping their style. We've built them a new engineering wing with plenty of breathing room, but now we need your help to outfit it with essential equipment. Note that you can donate to the general engineering wishlist or indicate a specific piece of equipment that you would like your donation to go towards - either way your support is greatly appreciated.

- $1,900Â Metal Bandsaw -Â https://www.precisionmatthews.com/shop/bs-712g/ A bandsaw can cut a wide range of materials, including metal bars, tubes, and structural shapes. Bandsaws provide accurate cuts, which is crucial for creating components that meet specific design specifications
- $5,500 Precision Shop Lathe - https://www.precisionmatthews.com/shop/pm-1228vf-lb/ A precision lathe is an essential tool for any fabrication facility. Precision lathes allow for the production of custom parts tailored to specific needs, making them ideal for industries like aerospace, medical devices, and automotive manufacturing.
- $8,000 HEPA Fume/VOC Extractor – BOFA AD 1000iQ - https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/bofa-ad-1000-iq/sk/MZA039LV A good Fume and VOC extractor is essential in an enclosed environment when using adhesives, glues, resins, soldering, etc. Health and safety.
- $600 3D Scanner - RevoPoint POP 3 -Â Â https://www.3dsourced.com/rankings/best-3d-scanner/#Revopoint-Pop-3 A 3D scanner will be helpful when integrating our designs with existing components and medical devices. Allows for designing tighter plumbing packaging, neater mounting methods, and such for field deployment, etc. as one example.
- $2,000 Material storage racks for tubing and sheet materials – Custom designed inhouse, built locally. An organized workshop is an efficient workshop. Having quick access to our available materials means less waste and duplication of material purchases
- $40,000 Small electric 2.5T forklift – PCB to cover some of the cost due to use as main push/pull vehicle for SuperD for all patient transfers into SD dewars. Other functions are general use to load and unload truck shipments, lift heavy objects to mezzanine, onto storage racks and onto worktables.
- $6,100 52” kick shear and 48” box & pan brake - https://www.trick-tools.com/Tennsmith-Foot-Shear-and-Box-Pan-Brake-Combo-Ten-Combo-15676A kick shear is a manually operated machine used for cutting large pieces of sheet metal. It's designed to provide clean, straight cuts and is particularly useful for cutting steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. A box and pan brake is used for bending sheet metal into various shapes, including boxes, pans, and other complex forms. This tool allows for precise and consistent bends, making it ideal for creating components like electrical boxes, metal cabinets, and enclosures.Â
- $27,175 Tormach 770M CNC Mill - https://tormach.com/770m-premium-package-cfg.html or – a Lower Cost CNC Mill as an alternative to the 770M is this one; $18,785 Tormach PCNC440 CNC Mill https://tormach.com/pcnc-440-premium-package-with-atc.html A good CNC mill will be used mainly for machining cryonics-specific custom designed aluminum and copper components. The more expensive mill is bigger, has a larger work area, and due to greater rigidity of the structure it can machine more types of materials in less time.
- $5,000 – $15,000 for Various Bulk Fastener Assortments - https://nutsandbolts.com/collections/fastener-assortments Almost everything we build requires threaded fasteners of some kind. We have always ordered fasteners piecemeal, which means that we buy each one separately at retail price as needed. Buying bulk fasteners means that we will have those fasteners in stock, and these will be much cheaper to implement in the long run. The price differential is based on which fastener assortments we can afford to purchase. More $ = more fasteners.
A well-designed engineering space is essential for maintaining and advancing our technical capabilities. Your contribution will help establish a purpose-built work environment where our team can efficiently manage, maintain, and develop our critical systems and equipment. This investment in infrastructure directly supports the quality and reliability of our preservation services.
