charity: water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 

Since we began in 2006, we've funded more than 121,314 water projects in 29 countries. When complete, these projects will provide clean, safe drinking water for more than 16.9 million people.

Nearly 771 million people in our world don’t have access to clean drinking water. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

The good news: there are simple solutions, from deep drilled wells to water filtration systems. And with the help of 1,000,000+ donors and individual fundraisers, we're forming a strong force against the water crisis.

This initiative is created by and for Airbnb alumni and employees, led by Janet Frishberg (Airfam ’13-’19, Recruiting) and Phillippe Siclait (Airfam ’12-’18, Engineering). We’ve assembled a small, volunteer team from the Airfam to help build and launch Equity for Impact, supported by the nonprofit Founders Pledge.

## The Founders Pledge Perspective

Science and technology have created amazing advances in human civilization, from agriculture to industry and beyond. Yet they have also created new challenges, both foreseen and unforeseen: the threat of engineered pandemics more deadly than any naturally occuring virus, the risk of artificial intelligence unaligned with conventional human values, the mental health implications of lives lived online, and others we may not yet recognize.

To address these challenges, improve the lives of people today, and protect future generations from natural and man-made risks, Founders Pledge has identified a short-list of charities working at the cutting edge of global risk response and human wellbeing. These organizations convene stakeholders, conduct research, and advocate for better national and global policies based on the best available evidence.

By giving to the Founders Pledge Science and Technology Index, you can spread your donation across several highly-impactful and neglected organisations working to answer big questions and create solutions to problems that affect us all. By pooling your donations, this Index fund allows you to make larger grants and thereby maximize your impact.

## Our Approach to Grantmaking

When evaluating potential grants, we consider several key points:

- **Counterfactual impact**. Our grants are designed to create a meaningful outcome that would not otherwise have happened. In particular, we aim to make grants that otherwise wouldn’t have been made, rather than those which just take the place of other philanthropists’ donations. This means that you can rely on the Funds to create meaningful, real change, rather than just maintaining the status quo.
- **The grant’s potential outcomes**. We focus on outcomes (e.g. how many lives were saved), rather than outputs (e.g. how many products were delivered). We review all the available evidence and take into account cost-effectiveness to assess whether the grant money could produce more good if donated elsewhere.
- **The organization’s funding gap**. Not all organizations are set up to scale up their programming and many can’t productively absorb large amounts of unsolicited funding. We evaluate all potential grantees’ capacity for growth and consider how much money they could put to good use.
- **Organizational strength**. Particularly with unrestricted funding, it’s important to have trust in the leadership and capacity of the organizations we support. We look at their track record of success and their transparency about failures as well as successes, and we only support those organizations which are exceptionally well run. We also look for organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to measuring outcomes and evaluating the impact of their programs.

EJI is committed to ending mass incarceration in the US and challenging racial and economic injustice.

Founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer and bestselling author of Just Mercy, EJI is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. We challenge the death penalty and excessive punishment and we provide re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people.

EJI works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. We are committed to changing the narrative about race in America. EJI produces groundbreaking reports, an award-winning wall calendar, and short films that explore our nation’s history of racial injustice, and we recently launched an ambitious national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today.

EJI provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform. We publish reports, discussion guides, and other educational materials, and our staff conduct educational tours and presentations for thousands of students, teachers, faith leaders, professional associations, community groups, and international visitors every year.

Equal Justice Initiative

Delivering unconditional cash directly to the world's poorest households via secure mobile transfers. 

Since 2009, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $580 million in unconditional cash transfers to families in need. These one-time cash transfers allow recipients to invest in what they need most and have been shown to improve their earnings, children’s school attendance, health, nutrition, and mental well-being.
 
GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. Recipients can then withdraw the mobile funds as cash with local agents and use the funds to invest in what they need – whether it’s on starting a business, education, making their home safer/sturdier, healthcare, or livestock.
 
GiveDirectly uses rigorous experimental research (randomized controlled trials) to measure the impact of their unconditional cash programs and answer public policy questions, generating evidence on key design and implementation questions across varied contexts. USA for UNHCR protects refugees and empowers them with hope and opportunity.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is the world’s leading organization aiding and protecting people forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict and persecution. UNHCR provides shelter, food, water, medical care and other lifesaving assistance to refugees around the world.

The dream of most refugees is to return home. When possible, UNHCR helps refugees return to their homeland. When refugees can’t go back home, UNHCR helps them rebuild their lives in another country. Since its formation by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950, UNHCR has helped an estimated 50 million refugees restart their lives and has twice received the Nobel Peace Prize.

We have completed our initial assessments of the damage from the reported 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern Haiti around 8:29am on 8/14, and the smaller earthquakes that struck afterwards. Immediately after the first earthquake struck, Hope for Haiti’s Country Director, Linda Thélémaque initiated our emergency phone tree to ensure the safety of all 62 Haitian staff members in-country. All team members are safe.

The devastating effects of the earthquake and coastal flooding have been felt throughout our impact area around Les Cayes and the southern (SUD) department. There are reports of fatalities, injuries, and significant damage to homes and healthcare facilities from our team and network of healthcare partners. Our Infirmary St. Etienne and office in Les Cayes were damaged, as were a number of staff homes.

We have a stockpile of emergency kits prepositioned and ready to distribute to vulnerable individuals and families. Given our over three decades of experience in emergency preparedness and response in southern Haiti, we are well-positioned and uniquely qualified to use our best available resources to help make a difference. Our team lives and works in the communities we serve, and is made up of Haitian doctors, nurses, program managers, and others dedicated to improving their own country.
