Fighting HIV/AIDS through innovative research and education 

First established in 1996 during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Botswana, the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP, formerly the Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute) is a collaborative research and training initiative undertaken jointly by the Government of Botswana and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. Located in Gaborone, Botswana, BHP houses the Botswana Harvard HIV Reference Laboratory, one of the largest HIV/AIDS laboratories in Africa, which serves as the reference testing lab for all HIV activities in Botswana.  A world-renowned educational institution of excellence in research and education pertinent to HIV/AIDS and other emerging public health challenges, BHP has between 250 and 300 employees at any given time, several active clinical research sites throughout the country, and high-functioning data, research laboratory, regulatory/ethics, human resource, finance, and administrative offices. One of the core missions of BHP is to build capacity through training African researchers, clinicians, and public health leaders. Dozens of African investigators and thousands of health workers have trained through BHP, at least half of them women.

BHP has partnered with the US branch of the Belgium-based King Baudouin Foundation (KBFUS) and their partner Every.org to accept donations from outside Botswana on BHP’s behalf. Both KBFUS and Every.org are 501(c)(3) public charities in the United States (EIN 58-2277856 and 61-1913297, respectively), so US-based donors may claim the maximum tax benefits allowed by US law for their contributions.
