Protecting the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples

Since 1996, Amazon Watch has defended the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Long-term, trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples — the best stewards of the rainforest — are the foundation for Amazon Watch’s campaigns for climate justice, corporate accountability, and the permanent protection of the rainforest.

The Amazon is home to more than 511 distinct Indigenous peoples. As our planet’s largest tropical rainforest, it stabilizes our global climate and an immense amount of Earth’s biodiversity and flowing freshwater can be found there. This vital ecosystem and the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded it for centuries face grave threats from deforestation, resource extraction, land grabs, and destructive development projects. The Amazon is facing a tipping point and won't be able to sustain itself as a rainforest if we remain on our current path of destruction.

To move to a turning point, Amazon Watch is carrying out campaigns in partnership with Indigenous peoples to secure Indigenous rights to ancestral territories, halt oil drilling and mining in the biome, and mobilize solidarity funds directly to Amazonian peoples at their request. Their work combines on-the-ground legal, advocacy, and communications expertise and long-term trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

🌳Amazon Watch’s Amazon Defenders Fund (ADF) provides direct solidarity funding to Amazonian peoples and organizations free of bureaucratic barriers. The ADF supports Indigenous-led initiatives including community organizing, women’s leadership, communal economies, protection of Earth Defenders at risk for resisting destructive development, and crisis response including to wildfires and oil spills. Room to Read envisions a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality through its evidence-driven programs.

Room to Read is a leader in gender education around the globe. With nearly 25 years of experience, Room to Reach has reached more than 325,000 girls in 10 countries through its impactful Girls’ Education Program, which is one of the world’s longest and most comprehensive programs dedicated to girls’ education and gender equality.  

Globally, 97% of girls benefiting from Room to Read's Girls’ Education Program successfully advance to the next grade level, and 96% graduate secondary school. Five years after the program, 79% of graduates are either employed or enrolled in higher education.

Room to Read’s tried-and-true program builds girls’ skills while helping entire communities understand and support gender equality education. By providing life skills lessons, one-on-one and group mentoring, family and community engagement, inspiring multimedia, and more for the girls who need it the most, Room to Read is contributing to meaningful generational change.  

By the end of 2027, we aim to:

- Double the number of active children benefiting from Room to Read’s materials and approaches. 
- Double the number of communities benefiting from Room to Read’s materials and approaches. 
- Increase new countries benefiting from Room to Read’s materials and approaches.
- Increase the number of educators and creatives with capacity to improve children’s foundational learning outcomes.

What do we have if we don't have each other? Kindness, compassion, empathy and generosity is what I believe in. 

Equality and justice are of paramount importance to me. I believe all humans are created equal and thus everyone should have equal opportunities and access, and NO ONE should suffer discrimination and hate.

The Amazon is the lungs of the planet and the Indigenous Peoples that live in it are the key to its survival.

Since I was a child I’ve loved the natural world, especially animals. It is our duty to protect our wildlife.

Indigenous people have been living in harmony with the earth for thousands of years. They live regeneratively yet are the most affected by climate change. WE. MUST. PROTECT. THEM.
