The Clean Slate Initiative works to expand and automate the sealing of arrest and conviction records after people have completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time - believing everyone should have a shot at redemption.   

We are a national, bipartisan non-profit organization that builds advocacy campaigns where local, state, and national partners operate with the shared goal of passing Clean Slate laws in states and in Congress.

Through partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated advocacy campaigns, the Clean Slate Initiative unites businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country.

We support state-based campaigns with the goal of passing laws that ensure conviction and non-conviction records are automatically sealed once someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time. 

The Clean Slate Initiative supports campaigns that have clear goals, well-thought-out strategies, and a vision for building a base of support that can defend and sustain policy wins.

Since this initiative’s inception, we have helped pass legislation that provides a path for: 

- 2.3 million people to have at least one conviction or non-conviction cleared;

- 7.3 million conviction and non-conviction cases to be cleared; and

- 2 million people to receive full record clearance.

You may wonder - why is there a need for Clean Slate Initiatives? Here are the facts: 

1 in 3 adults in the United States have an arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to work, obtain housing, and engage in civic life. Having a record, even an arrest record, is a significant barrier to economic mobility. 

- 9 in 10 employers use background checks when hiring.

- 4 in 5 landlords use background checks on prospective tenants.

- 3 in 5 colleges and universities use background checks on prospective students.

There are more than 44,000 collateral consequences that limit the ability of people with a record to access meaningful opportunities to build a better life. Our work focuses on automating the process to remove those barriers, providing a real second chance for the millions who are currently impacted by an arrest or conviction record. 





The Clean Slate Initiative


DIY Girls empowers girls to explore STEAM through programming that builds skills, confidence and community.


DIY Girls mission is to increase girls' interest and long-term success in technology, engineering and making through innovative educational experiences and mentor relationships.

DIY Girls was founded in 2011 to inspire and motivate girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and math by Luz Rivas, current California State Assemblywoman for the 39th District. Luz developed the first module of the Creative Electronics curriculum, which is still used today. Since then, DIY Girls has expanded our programming to include Creative Engineering, Invent Girls, GANAS Alumni Network, Summer Woodworking Camp, and much more. DIY Girls has served 5,711 girls and now serves nearly 450 girls per year across 15 school sites in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and with community partners throughout Los Angeles.  The majority of the girls in our programs are girls of color, ages 10-18 who reside in the Northeast San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, including the City of San Fernando. DIY Girls positively influences girls by providing tools to build their technical skills and confidence to pursue STEM as they enter adolescence and start to explore career interests. From microbes to alien intelligence, the SETI Institute is the only organization dedicated to the search for life beyond Earth.

Have you ever looked at the stars and wondered if humans are alone in the universe?

The SETI Institute is a non-profit dedicated to the exploration and understanding of life on Earth and beyond. Our researchers are working to understand humanity's beginnings and our place among the stars. 

The SETI Institute runs the Allen Telescope Array, the first observatory built from the ground up to search for signals from technologically advanced societies in nearby star systems. Since federal funding for SETI research like this is limited, our donors have carried the torch for humanity in searcing the universe for other intelligent species. 

But life comes in all sizes, and just because there aren't other intelligent species in our solar system, doesn't mean there isn't microbial life on Mars or under the ice of Europa. Our scientists study extreme environments and the microbes that inhabit them so we are better prepared to search for life on planetary bodies throughout the galaxy. For example, the SETI Institute has a long history of supporting Mars exploration, including the search for biosignatures and the understanding of the planet's past climate. 

And research is only a part of what we do. We are also committed to educating the next generation of SETI scientists and public programming on science topics critical to all of humanity.

Muttville is changing the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs.

Every day...
dogs in good health with wonderful personalities are euthanized. Why? Because they're older, and not considered adoptable. A dog is brought in because he can't jog with his guardian anymore. Or he needs a little time to get up the stairs. Or he’s simply not a puppy. In some cases, dogs are moved from loving homes to concrete cages because their guardians have died or simply can't care for them anymore.

We reach out to senior dogs at risk, give them the care they need, and find them loving forever homes. If we had our way, no dog would spend their last days in a shelter. There is so much love and joy in these dogs!
