In March 2020, Bacio and I entered each others lives at just the right moment. He had been found abandoned on the streets of the Mission a month earlier, barely alive, in dire need of food, love, and medical attention. I was a couple of weeks into COVID lockdown, living alone, and grappling with the depressing prospect of indefinite isolation. We were so good for each other.

Bacio was a senior dog when I adopted him. We didn't know his exact age (or anything about his prior life), but the best guess was about 10 years old. Senior dogs often don't get adopted, and are frequently euthanized at shelters in order to make space for younger dogs who are more likely to be adopted. This is where Muttville comes in. They are a San Francisco based no-kill (and no-cage) shelter specializing in senior rescues. They take in seniors from across the state of California, provide extensive medical care to get them to a healthy place, work with a network of foster parents to help the dogs get to a better place mentally, and then find them a forever home.

Senior dogs have so much love and energy and life left to give. I can't the last few years of my life without Bacio. As heartbroken as I am right now, I'm also so thankful that Muttville was able to connect me with Bacio in the first place, because the last three years were such a gift.

Every day...
dogs in good health with wonderful personalities are euthanized. Why? Because they're older, and not considered adoptable. A dog is brought in because he can't jog with his guardian anymore. Or he needs a little time to get up the stairs. Or he’s simply not a puppy. In some cases, dogs are moved from loving homes to concrete cages because their guardians have died or simply can't care for them anymore.

We reach out to senior dogs at risk, give them the care they need, and find them loving forever homes. If we had our way, no dog would spend their last days in a shelter. There is so much love and joy in these dogs!
